A lot of people like Blockbuster, a lot of people like Hollywood Video, and a lot of people like other smaller chains. But my favorite video store is a mom/pop store with quite a wide range of selections. Their website isn't all that great. But, their library directory is an open directory where you can see all the films they have by category:

Actually, I was thinking more about the "local area" stores people visit as opposed to online stores. VLibrary.com is very interesting, though. It's been years since I've seen the title "Invasion Of the Bee Girls" (grin) ... and just as long since I've seen "Wild In The Streets."

They mail them in a cardboard box...two or more mailed out in one.

If you only rent one title, they'll fill the box with an empty plastic cassette case.

Depending on how many you select out at a time - 4 is the max. one box can hold, but you can rent up to 12 titles at a time.
The boxes are taped together and sent via UPS.


You use the postpaid mailing stickers sent with the tapes on the same box they are mailed in and drop them into any mail box (U.S. Mail)

Very easy.

I've been renting from them for almost 20 years...never had a problem with 'em.

Facets is almost the same...only they'll use a smaller box just for one cassette.
But you have to take the box to the post office to insure.

My library is pretty good, too, selection-wise. The problem is that there are so many people putting them on their wait lists. I've yet to receive notice that one film I've asked for is ready for pickup ... and I have more than a few on my wait list. The oldest request I made was of DVDs for the TV series, "Kung Fu." Sadly, the library's online system doesn't tell you your "ranking" on the wait list ... so you don't have any idea how many people are ahead of you (sigh). The wait-list request was logged (sigh) just after Thanksgiving last year.

BTW, earlier I mentioned "Wild In The Streets." I went to IMDB.com and, according to them, it's available on VHS but not DVD. But, when I went to Amazon.com's site to read what people said in their reviews, a few reviewers indicated it WAS available on DVD - as part of a double-feature DVD including the Roger Corman film, "GAS-S-S-S!" Sure enough, I did some checking around and found the film in 3 places quickly (there are probably more) ... a British online store that only sells Region 1 copies, BestBuy.com, and VideoUniverse.com. VideoUniverse was cheaper so I bought the DVD from them ($10.39 plus shipping).

Anyhoo, one reviewer at Amazon.com said that MGM/UA released the DVD last year ... and almost immediately, suspended production of it. It can't even be found in their own catalog anymore. So, what's out there now is all there is. Anyone who's interested in the film should snap it up before it's gone for good:

EDIT - Oops ... correction. Looks like I lost a teensy bit of money. BestBuy.com's DVD is 60 cents more ... but their shipping charges are $1.74 cheaper. Actually been a while since I've rented from them...been sort of hooked on DVD rentals only.

These 60's LSD films are kinda funny to look at nowadays.

I wish SomethingWeird Video would put some more of their movies out on DVD, like It Won't Rub Off, Baby.

I can't find a VHS tape cheaper than the DVD version (with a movie on the flipside as a bonus) ... and I'd much rather have a DVD, especially since it's a pro DVD from MGM/UA (as opposed to a burn-job).

I've gotten a lot already, but my tastes tend to lie in older dramas & other movies that usually aren't in very high demand. Recent examples of stuff I got... "The Time Machine" (1960), "Insomnia," "Pretty in Pink," "Black Hawk Down," "Speed," "Fatal Attraction," "Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams"... these came in within 3 to 7 days after requesting. It's mostly the new releases that get hundreds of holds. Could be that less people have caught on to checking out library DVD's here than where you are, tho.

It's probably because, while they have a good selection of titles, they only have a limited number of copies of each title. Low but diverse supply, high and diverse demand. Hehe, someday, I'll probably get a call telling me, "Mr. West, your 14 DVDs are ready for pickup now ... and they all have to be back in 10 days."

Sometimes I use Hastings ($3.49 for 5 days with $1 credit for next day return) or my local grocery store which charges $1.99 for new releases and $.89 for older titles. The one thing I don't like about the grocery store is that most of their rentals are fullscreen only. Some are both formats and the occasional widescreen only if that's all it comes in.

for anything obscure, my favorite is Discount Video in Minneapolis - 95% VHS, but they specialize in the obscure... tons of Something Weird, Russ Meyer, Asian flicks, etc. etc. etc.

when I lived in Virginia, I used to go to Video Vault, for the same reasons - tons of obscure and hard to find videos that no one else in the area carried.

My favorite video store is a little mom & pop store. They have $1 DVD rentals every Monday.

I rent mostly from BlockBuster - not that they're my fav., they're just close to home. Favorite is (was) a little mom and pop outfit (a few years back when I lived in Toronto) - used to rent all the time from them and was on first names with the owners. Was really nice, they'd set aside new shows I wanted to see and would periodically order in special shows I wanted to see.

Blockbuster, because you could always count on them.

We have a new place called Hollywood Video here but it is little good.

When I lived the West Bank, we had a place called Major Video. They had all kinds of stuff. They rented LaserDisc and VHS movies. I think they still there but I havent been over there in a while. They would always give a coupon for a free car wash.

They probably do have it. As I said earlier, their website isn't all that great. And, their online catalog isn't a complete reflection of their stock. You won't find the Godfather "Epic" version (I & II on 3 VHS tapes, told in chronological order) in their online catalog either ... but I've rented it from them.
