I have a Gateway AR-230 (R0) #2520156 DVD Recorder which works
well. However, I would like to update the firmware from version
1139 to 1163. So I downloaded "7514855.exe" from Gateway's web
site, and this file unzipped to "GWEA1163.D02" which I burned
on a CD-R using Nero 5.5.9.17 running on Windows 98 (not SE).
If I put this CD into the recorder to update the firmware, the
recorder will display "FILE" and indicate "Data disc" on the TV
screeen, and then eject the CD without performing the update.
I contacted 3 technical support people at Gateway, but they
don't have a clue as to what is going on!
I have seen on the internet that other people have had this
problem, but I have not seen a solution to it. If anyone knows
of a one, I would appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks, Len

Although I have the LiteOn 5001, it is essentially the same unit.
When I upgraded, I found that I could not go directly from the 1139 to the 1163 firmware, but had to do all of the upgrades in between. If the Gateway site has these upgrades, you might want to try it that way. -
Istill have the original firmware for mine with the mv turned off. I don't need that feature anymore. Do any of the firmware upgrades have one touch recording, for 30 minute intervals? Any other reason to upgrade?

Gateway does not have intermediate upgrades between 1139 and 1163.
Version 1163 firmware resolves a difficulty when recording
to the 1394 port and a stopping message may occur.
This firmware improves video quality and media compatibility.
Additional features or enhancements:
* Provide Text/Thumbnail dual-mode DVD menu.
* "Prompt Format" when loading blank CD/DVD-R/DVD-RW.
* New AP "Channel Editor" when watching source tuner.
* DVD recorded but erase all titles should show the menu
with an empty title.
* Show disabled previous/next button in first and last DVD
menu pages.
* Can display longer title name while in text view menu.
* Auto-format only show "Preparing" on on-screen display;
no percentage.
* Reboot stays in last view.
* Special effects in JPEG slide show.
* JPEG CD plays next image after marked-stop.
* Shows "Warning Message" when tray out un-finalized discs.
* Add "CloseTrack" method for DVD+R/-R to save 15 tracks
after recording failure.
* Available System Date up to 2099.12.31.
* More country/language support.
* Add warning message in Guider format disc page.
* Insert chapter manually while recording by pressing the
'EDIT' key.
* OTR (One-Touch Recording) support. While recording,
pressing 'RECORD' activates the OTR function, starting
from 30 minutes to the total available recording time
with a 30-minute interval. -
I too, had the same problem with my AR-230 Uncle Len. I was told by Gateway to return the unit for repair or possible replacement. I returned the unit last week so I don`t have any results on a possible fix. I was told it would take between 5-7 business days, plus shipping time, to get the unit back.

I think I have your solution, did you make sure to install while in dvd mode on the recorder? Dvd mode is where the gateway logo is on screen. It probably wont work if its on input mode, or on the setup screen.

Stoney - it's interesting that Gateway told you to return the unit. I hope you
let me know what happens when you get it (or a replacement) back. My guess is
that it will have version 1163 already installed so you don't have to bother
doing it yourself.
Note to solidsnake: The problem exists even when the recorder is in DVD mode.
