Hello,
I am a total newbie to this forum, but I'm a little familiar some video apps and processes.
I am seeking help with a problem I can't seem to solve.
Normally, I can play and\or fix most Xvid's or other formats OK.
But I have come across a DVD rip in Xvid MP4 format that gives me certain problems which I don't know what to do about.
I did check this avi in Divfix and it says it's fine. I did check it in gspot and it says I have the needed codecs to play it... however...
When played in every player I've tried [from Power DVD to WMP, etc] the video has many long sections that 'flicker' in an odd way... it 'strobes'.. that is to say, it is flashes white like a strobe light while the picture is playing. I do see the picture but also get this 'strobing' effect that I know should not be there.
At first I thought this was a codec problem during decoding, ... I did have the Divx codec installed, and also ffshow codecs, etc.... So, I got the newest Xvid open source codec as well but the problem is still there.
I got curious and tried to do some conversions of the original Xvid avi. I have learned one bit of info from this:
As I ran it through Virtual Dub, saving out to 'full processing' plain avi... I can see where the 'flickering' comes from... that is, I can see it while VDub plays the avi in 'slow motion' while processing it.
What I see is that in various sections of the avi, what looks like thin, black, venetian blinds, break up the images. This corresponds with the sections of the avi that show the flickering.
Now I also learned that if I have VDub save out an uncompressed avi of this Xvid, the 'strobe or flickering' is gone... the only problem with that is the resulting file is over 60 gb's!
I'm wondering if anyone has come across something like this and might suggest a solution for me?
Thanks for any help...![]()

Or save it out uncompressed, then re-encode it!
There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary... -
right... I did try that Direct Stream don't solve the problem...
and as I mentioned, saving it out uncompressed, is a bit of a nightmare because of the resulting file size... 60+ gb's... I really don't have enough HD room to deal with that..unfortunately...
I 'could' ..I suppose save out little sections uncompressed and then recompress, but ..ouch... what a pain in the rear to have to deal with that way...
I do believe that the Xvid avi I have actually works for people... It was given to me so I must assume people are able to run it properly... Unfortunately I have no way to speak with anyone about it other than here....
so, again I can only ask if anyone has encountered a similar problem and if so, how did you solve it?
I do thank you for the suggestions! -
well ok never mind... I don't know why but I found the solution!
got the latest version of VLC Media player and it works perfectly and as it should... so I can only conclude that all my other players, including Power DVD 6, suck when it comes to Xvid MP4 decoding...
thanks for all the help and perhaps my experience with this prob. will be useful to others
