  1. Not so much DVD authoring as DVD-Case authoring, but it's still part of the DVD creation phase IMHO.

Having created my DVD with chapters etc (currently using TMPGEnc DVD Author) and burned it, I would like to create an insert for the DVD case that contains thumbnails of each chapter (as presented on the menus when watching the DVD). This makes it easy to work out what's on the DVD - especially since most of mine are family DVDs with multiple short clips from a variety of places on different days (you get the picture - 'scuse the pun).

Currently, I fire up VirtualDub, manually go the the timecode of each chapter (taken from the Edit part of DVD Author which is running at the same time) and save the frame as a BMP. I then bring the BMPs into my OpenOffice template for the case cover and resize them and move them about.

What I would like is to be able to run a program which takes the chapter points on a DVD and generates a BMP of the first frame from each. Failing that, a program that extracts the timecodes of each chapter to a text file and another one to extract frames from given timecodes.

Anyone know of such a beast?

I know for the second part. PgcEdit comes with a preview program PgcEditPreview, which you can use to extract a bitmap from any location in a VOB file. It can be used as a standalone program, but also as a command-line argument program. You don't give it the time code, but instead the LBA (sector) where you want your image extracted. You can also ask it to resize it.
That only answers your 2nd problem.
Let me know if you want to give it a shot, I'll send you more info.

MenuShrink a free tool to shrink menus into stills with or without audio!
DVDSubEdit: a free tool to modify your subtitles directly inside the vob.

  3. ChapEditGFD (ChapterEditor of the GUI for dvdauthor) can do it very easy.
You need the chapterlist in a hh:mms:msec format, the video as mpeg2 (or vob). ChapeditGFD creates a bmp image for each chapterpoint automatically.

To create the timecodes as textfile, use chapterxtractor

Software player like powerdvd can do screen captures. Play back your video using the player and pause at the point that you want to capture, and press the capture icon in lower left of "remote", looks like a camera. You can capture a shot of your menu or capture the appropriate frames of your video individually and assemble in your cover design prog. I do this all the time for my custom projects, very quick and easy. (I got powerdvd free bundled with a dvd writer and another copy with my new computer purchase from Dell).
