  1. Here's the deal:

My friend has a combo VHS-to-DVD writer. We took a VHS tape I had made years ago of Super 8 family movies and burned it to DVD. The combo unit made up a really ugly menu and tacked it to the DVD. So now I have this DVD with beloved movies and a tacky menu.

Actually, I don't want the menu at all. I'd like to put the DVD into a player and have the content start straight away.

So I copied all the files from the DVD to my hard drive. In VIDEO_TS, there were what seemed to be two sets of files. One is named VTS_01_0 through VTS_01_9; the other is VIDEO_TS. Obviously the VTS_01 is the transfer of my movies. Having read a simple description of the DVD format from here, I tried burning the VTS_01_* files to a VIDEO_TS folder onto a blank DVD+RW. However, when I insert it, my DVD player says it doesn't think it's a video disk a all. (I have no problem readiing the original, also on a DVD+RW.) So, obviously I've missed something important.

The original also has a VIDEO_RM folder, which I haven't yet tried copying. Since I obviously didn't understand something essential, I thought I'd hold off on further experimenting until I got a clue.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    hi there Rafting Bear,

you cant just pull a chunk of a dvd off and write it to another disc and expect it to work - they dont work that way i'm afraid.

presuming your freind has finalised the disc, it should be just like a regular DVD. in which case use DVDshrink to rip only the content and not the menu's. then write this in a reputable disc writing app, such as nero.

if you have any more problems, post what kind of software youre using - it'll help us to help you.

I'd also suggest you use DVDShrink and grab what you want but also output as an ISO. You can then use DVDDecrypter to burn the ISO to DVD
