  1. Hi,

Have tried searching but haven't found a solution to this problem here:

I have a VIDEO_TS folder containing something I recorded off TV with a standalone Philips DVDR80, "edited" on the standalone recorder (cut beginning and end, inserted chapter marks and then run the "make compatible" function) and then ripped with MTR using "main feature only" to get rid of the crappy generic Philips menu.

The VIDEO_TS folder is burnable to a DVD-R and looks awesome, it has no menu, autostarts of course, has chapter marks the way I inserted them.

Now for the problem: I want this DVD to contain four additional .mov movies - so it also needs a simple menu. Making just a DVD with these four .mov files is easy using iDVD, but then what about the VIDEO_TS folder? How do I do this while keeping the VIDEO_TS contents the way they are? Without decreasing the quality etc. ?

  2. Convert the VIDEO_TS/VOBs to MPEGs via MPEG Streamclip.

Encode additional MPEGs from the .movs (iDVD can save as .img, mount it and extract the MPEGs from the VOBs as above).

Author the MPEGs with Sizzle, Toast, DVDSP etc.

Just to let you know you don't need to use MTR to rip your DVD in order to get a menu-less DVD. You can drag the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD itself to Toast's Video window with DVD-Video selected as the format. Delete the 0-second Title that appears (it is the old menu) and uncheck the Create DVD Menu box. Now Save as Disc Image (if you only have one drive) or the burn button (if you have two drives).

Also, to do what havema-1 describes you can use MPEGStreamclip to extract the MPEG2 from the DVD without having to first rip it to the hard drive.

  4. Thanks guys! Very nice help indeed. I haven't used Streamclip before, will give it a try.

  5. Well, exporting to MPEG was no good and I don't know why. MPEG Streamclip loaded the VOB stream but when converting to MPEG the sound disappeared.

I saved it as DV instead and the results are stunning. Importing to iMovie and/or directly to iDVD with no problems.
