  1. Hi!

I've been a little confused about color spaces after reading about it on websites the last days. Is YUV the name of one specific color space (like YUY2 or UYVY) and/or is it only the name of the group containing packed and planar formats? Some people write about YUV in the same way as a specific format.

What are thet quality losses when converting between YUV formats (YUY2->YV12, YV12->YUY2)? And if there are losses, are they seen with normal eyes? Does this change from software to software depending on the quality of the algorithms? Perhaps there are lossless converters out there?

I read that Premiere Pro works internal with AYUV format. Are imported files in YV12 and YUY2 converted to AYUV in Premiere or do they remain in the original source? Does that mean that there could be lossy convertations when working with YV12 or YUY2 files?

    Confused by colors,

    Fredrik

YUV is the 24bit (typ) color space (i.e. AYUV without alpha)
YUV can also be 10 or more bits per componet (e.g. Digital Betacam)

Are you asking about color theory or encoding technique? It's not clear what your level of experience is. YUV is a general term ("name of the group").

UYVY and YUY2 refer to spacial variations of 4:2:2 sampling
    YV12 is a 12bit 2 plane compression

Losses can easily happen when converting color spaces.
Try to ask more specific questions and define the context.
