  1. My friend gave me a mpeg file which he converted from his ATI .vcr format to SVCD mpeg2 (using tools provided by ATI). The mpeg file play ok on his computer (winXP) using WMP 9. But I have problem playing it on my PC running WIN2000 WMP9.
At first WMP said it encountered an error while opening the file. The error flash quickly on the screen and disappeared. But I think that it was trying to download a codec.
I downloaded and installed "mpeg-2_codec[www.free-codecs.com].zip". Now WMP plays the audio and not the Video (blank screen)

    Any help ?
I prefer to play it with WMP and not installing another software player.

Check the file with AVIcodec or Gspot and see if you still need a codec.

The issue isn't JUST a codec, but rather convincing WMP that it's an MPEG2 file at all. Is the file extension .MPG? That kicked my butt for a while. Some codecs seem to have the ability to tell built in, and some don't. You might need to change the extension. I know it sounds silly, but that's the way it is.

Or... you could install PowerDVD, which puts its own MPEG2 codec into the system.

The problem, of course, is that no matter WHAT the aspect ratio will be all wrong. SVCD's are 480x480 and that's supposed to be 4:3, which of course it won't be. So unless there's some amazing new codec which auto-upscales the horizontal resolution by a third, you're stuck using some other player ANYWAY, since WMP won't let you skew the video in just one dimension.
