I just installed the DIV3 codec because I received an error message in Virtual Dub Freeze.
Is this codec going to interfere or take precedence over a newer version and cause problems with other AVI's?
Should I (and how would I) revert back to a newer version and forego the convesion of this particular AVI?

    TIA.

If I recall correctly though DivX 3's VfW decoder was buggy. It used to server up RGB24 whether you wanted it or not.

I would suggest ffdshow over DivX3 and that includes for encoding.

I don't know what you mean by 'RGB24'. Can you please explain?

24bit Red, Green, Blue. DivX3 is internally YV12, as such the decoder should be able to serve YV12, YUY2 or RGB.
I'm sure that there would be a FAQ about colourspaces somewhere around here?

I just installed ffdshow and it still gives me the div3 can't open error in Vdub. Here's the exact error I'm getting:

    "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DIV3' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V3 Hack: DivX Low-Motion])

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Make sure that DivX 3 is not set to disabled in the VFW decoder config.

Also if you installed the 2004.10.12 (think that is the one) version under win2k/XP then the VfW codec would not have installed correctly.
