Hi...I was able to successfully burn my first VCD just a few minutes ago and I am sooooooooo happy! I have reached my first goal and now have to reach for the second. My ultimate goal is to make an SVCD. I am using windv, virtualdub, tmpeng and VCDeasy. I am using freeware versions of the software. I can't seem to raise the standard to SVCD. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of the freeware?

    Thanks!

You would need to tell us more of steps you are using. You do realize that the trial version of TMPGEnc has limited MPEG-2 encoding, which you need for SVCD or DVDs.

Thanks...I am using Windv to transfer the file from my Sony to the computer. I use virtualdub to do the editing, TMPGEnc to do the encoding and then VCDeasy to burn the CD. I did not know that about TMPGEnc. Are there limitations with VCDeasy also?

So VCD uses MPEG1 while SVCD and DVD use MPEG2?

Yes. And the free version of TMPGEnc only produces MPEG1. The "plus" version is the same, but with the MPEG2 encoding unlocked.

There are free MPEG2 encoders (I believe), one of them (I think) is QuEnc. But I don't know it's quality. Look in the tools section...

No, but the older versions were free and the newer one requires you to buy it.

I think I may still have on older (free) version of VCDEasy. I can email it if the filesize isn't too large. Given it was freeware at the time, I'm guessing it shouldn't be classed as warez by offering it. Apologies if it is, and (of course) it won't be sent (sorry).

The older versions are available on the web if you search around.

Thanks! I have the latest free version of VCDeasy. I will check the other websites to see about the cost of the other software. It seems to work very well with little trouble so I would like to keep it. The computer I am using is only a 2.4 ghz celeron so I like the idea of using several programs and not having to load 50 mb of software that works...some of the time..maybe most of the time but does not always work as it is supposed to. I had this problem with a Ulead program, version 7. I also felt that the program was too busy with so many things crammed into the screen.

  10. If you are looking for a free solution I would suggest to try avidemux2(here look for avidemux and after that follow the Windows link for avidemux2). It makes absolutely compliant VCD, SVCD, DVD mpeg1,2 streams with mpeg2enc. It is slow like TMPGEnc. But the beauty is that the application is codecs independant - it has all built in.
