I've had the RjTech 250PDVX for a couple of months now, and it did play just about everything up to now. Including a few Xvid encoded avi's that I had downloaded. I just got some new files encoded with Xvid, and at first they would not play on any PC or the DVd player. So I updated the Xvid codec on my pc's to version 1.03 and now the files will play in WinMedia Player. But I'm still out of luck on the RJTech player. Maybe they will have a firmware update someday, but right now their website has very little. Since the Xvid is a freeware codec there's no reason they couldn't get it - I was pleased they chose to support Xvid in the first place.

did you try to change the FOURCC to DiVX ?

'splain please. You mean I can change somefin in the files that might make them playable? (I already converted them from Matroska to regular Xvid avi with Virtualdub.)
-
use the 4CC changer that comes with xvid and change the FourCC to DiVX/DiVX
only takes 1 sec -- see if that works"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I just tried it. It didn't make any difference. They still play on the PC but the DVD player still says "Codec not supported".

Do you have GMC on? Xvid's GMC won't work on standalones.
Sorry, I had to go see about a girl -

dunno what is causing the issue with your player.
Otherwise, you may have to convert to DVD format to play it.
(VSODivxtoDVD, WinAVI, etc)
Part of the prob w/ xvid is all the updates, different builds. OEM mfgs are hard pressed to keep up with them all to update fws
Or maybe try re-encode from Matroska->Divx? -
It could also be custom matrices used when encoding.. std mpeg matrices work ok but custom matrices either give a weird blurred picture or possibly "codec not supported" .. divx do at least have the home theatre profile which defines which standards the Mfrs should stick to eg 1 Bvop, NO gmc or qpel, std matrice.. xvid has no such thing yet, as its just an encoder. Maybe they will correct this in the future...

I see RjTech has a firmware update for the 250PDVX on their web site as of last week. But seeing as the laser has just failed in mine, and this is the second time it happened, I don't want to spend any more time on this piece of unreliable junk. It worked great when new, but two of them have now failed after one whole month of use. RJTech wants 12 bucks shipping to service it under warranty and I'm not sure it's worth that much. I might check out the new Initial portable with DIVX that Walmart is selling.
-
Does the Initial portable allow firmware updates? If not, you may run into the same issues with xvid files, and have no possibilities of future fw fixes.
I'd recommend the Phillips DVP-642. While it too won't play QPEL/GMC'd files, it still can do quite a few w/o issues, & is fw updateable
