  1. Is it possible to burn a DVD-R in VCD or SVCD format, thereby fitting several hours of video on one disc, and playing back in a DVD player? This assumes that the DVD player can play back normal DVD-R, VCD, SVCD etc. Any help would be appreciated, I've asked around but no one knows for sure.

  2. you didnt do good enough SEARCH of any of the previous posts. in short NO, you will have to extract the movie out of the VCD/SVCD and reauthor in DVD format.

  3. VCD? Yes.

You can put VCD files on a DVD-R and get several hours on a disc by doing so. The audio will have to be resampled to 48KHz ([S]VCD uses 44.1KHz) but consumer DVD authoring programs typically handle that conversion for you.

    SVCD? No.

DVD can handle a variety of resolutions, but 480x480 isn't one of them. The video will have to be transcoded to 352x480 or 720x480 in order to be DVD compliant, in addition to resampling the audio to 48KHz.

Safest Bets (if DVD conversion is anticipated):

XVCD (352x240, up to 1.8Mb/S video, 48KHz audio)
XSVCD (352x480, up to 2.4Mb/S video, 48KHz audio)

Both will look better than their [S]VCD counterparts, and will be easy to migrate to DVD in the future.
