Trying to author my first DVD, but am having a spot of bother.

I've recorded a 80min film to my hard drive in Mpeg format using Intervideo Wincoder.

Trouble is the Mpeg file is just slightly too large to go onto DVDr disc (4.4gb). I'm using Ulead dvd factory 3 to author my discs, but there doesn't appear to be a way of compressing the file to fit.

Any suggestions on how to reslove this?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm sure there is an easier way, but I would just create an image for a DL disc (8gig vs 4gig). Then open the disc image in DVDShrink and compress it to fit.

Ideally, you want to capture at proper bitrates so that it will fit (but that might be a pain at this stage of the game).

What type of audio did you capture? if you captured LPCM audio, then you could get it to fit by switching to mpeg or dolby digital audio (mpeg audio can be problematic on NTSC DVD Player,s and the Trial does not support Dolby Digital audio).

Other than re-capturing at slightly lower bitrates, you can do a couple of other things:

    1) Author your dvd as usual, and burn the slightly larger dvd to your hard drive. Then use something like DVD Shrink to shrink it down to fit
    2) change the project template to use bitrates that will allow your video to fit (video and audio). Make sure you don't check the "Do not convert compliant mpeg files" checkbox in the settings.

    Ah-ha, that's got it.

Soon as I unchecked the "don't convert compliant mpeg files" box, the file size of the disc dropped dramatically. It was then just a case of altering the bitrate to make sure it fitted properly.

Ahh the pains of 1st time authoring
