    Go Lacy.

Join the waggon full of happy video'ers.
(yeah, you are drone 030405.13:37 hehe)

(I would suggest you not use VR mode, instead use the Video Mode, when
initializing your disc's. This way, they will work, at least in your pc
dvd-rom drive - and it's fast. faster than my iLO unit.. hmm..
    ..Anyways )

You won't regret it. I just keep finding new things out each passing moment.
For instance.. I love the un-finalize feature. Its truely a great feature.

    --> Panasonic E55 - "Tint my Ride"

I just keep loving it. Anyways.

the pioneer 220-s is the same as the 320 model with the only difference being the 320 model has the firewire port to plug in a dv camcorder.

in VR mode i do not have to finalize to extract the video to my PC with my DVD drive, i can also take it to my pioneer dv-270 in the bedroom and watch it in there without finalizing.

if i recorded in dvd-video mode i would have to finalize the discs prior to extracting the video for editing on the PC or watching it on the pioneer dv-270.

if i needed to record something urgently to take somewhere and i knew i wouldnt have time to edit, author, etc., myself, then i would record in dvd-video mode.. but normally i'm not under those types of time constraints.

basically its like this.. record simpsons tonight in vr-mode, once its done take it to pc/bedroom and extract/watch, no wait time..

record simpsons tonight in video-mode, wait for finalization (which can be a while sometimes), then i can go extract or watch..

I now know why some people, VR mode works outside their 220's, while in
others' (mine for instance) it does not.., and we have to resort to the
Video Mode if we want to work with the final disc outside the 220 unit.

But, I didn't know it at the time I first bought it (this past Friday) and
made all the fuss over nothing. That, plus having to getting use to another
form of routine. I had already learned it with my iLO dvdr04 unit, and got so
accustom to it working outside the unit w/out any fuss on my part, that I
miss-took that fact, and assumed it would still apply (blindly) across the
board with *any* unit. I was wrong. An accident waiting to happen, and it
happend to me this past Friday. Luckly, I had a good sleep, and later in the
morning, I got possitive results, and lowered blood press and I calm'ed down.
And ever since, I'm am a satisfied customer. (so far)

But as I was saying.. that it all makes sense to me now (now that I'm relaxed)
that the answer is simple. You have a Pioneer brand unit elsewhere's in your
setup of things.. a dvd player and/or rom-drive.
    .
I read elsewhere, that as long as you had a Pioneer product (dvd player,
rom-drive etc) that you have a better chance of being successful at playing
a VR formated disc in these 'outside' devices from your 220S, w/out having
to resort to finalizing your disc. So, you must have one of these lucky
    setups that work for you.
    .
But like i say, I didn't know this. Now, I do. And, now other do too
And, there *is* nothing wrong with either format, but do know this..
    .
VR mode was designed for in-house use. That is.. for easier editing, etc.
w/in the 220 units. And, the Video Mode is for compatibility with the outside
    world.

But, just to note.. even if you don't have a Pioneer outside unit, there are
some units (ie, dvd-rom drives, and dvd players) that will in fact read the
VR mode discs. It's just a hit n miss experience. But, once you know for sure
which one works for *your* given setup, its just a matter of using that method
in your on-going endeavors. That's it.

    Problem solved

    * VR - mode is good for in-house work inside your unit.
... If you experience non-compatability w/ a VR formated disc, just switch
... the initlization mode (that is, re-initialize it for Video Mode, and do
... your projects again) and stick to Video Mode for those projects that
    ... require the work-around.

    * Video Mode - is better for outside work, all-together.
... These, you can feed to your dvd-rom drives (works on my Optorite DD0201)
... and re-touch up your projects and re-author them on your pc. They should
... also play fine in a Pioneer brand unit
... You might also have to play with the Audio a bit too, to play correctly
... inside your given dvd player. For some reason, my AD-1500 dvd player will
... not play them correctly, and give me drunken activies. I blaim it on the
... audio format (I read it produces AC3 audio, but its not etched in stone)

  6. lumis, I can appreciate that because I often forget to finalize before taking a disk to the computer.

But I like to use Decrypter to rip by title and it doesn't work with a VR disk.

I have two other units outside my home ... that I play my Panasonic DMR-E50S disks on ... the Sanyo player at Walmart ... $45 bucks -- has to be finalized.

And the Panasonic S27 DVD player [$78 bucks at Walmart but cant find it at Walmart anymore] ... positive with this unit is ... the S27 will play DVD-RAM disks made with the Panasonic E50S unit.

Reason for deciding on the Pioneer 220S ... is being able to use DVD-RW disks.

I only have the Toshiba SD-M1712 DVD-ROM [reads DVD-RAM] in my computer setup and it has been giving me trouble. I shot compressed air in and didn't really help. So I took out and removed one of the covers and cleaned the lint/fuzz from it.

And even tho I couldn't see the laser lense ... I took a q-tip and bent it [to reach the hard to reach areas] and wiped around the area where it is located.

After cleaning the SD-M1712 I was successful at transfering the vro video ... I used Womble mpeg-vcr to access the vro file directly from the disk and after triming the crap off beginning and ending ... I then transfered to my HD.

    Also ... in last few hours ... I won this ... Panasonic SW-9583-C 8X DVD ± R RW DVD-RAM Multi Drive ... with shipping ... $62 bucks total.

We sure do love our hobbies ... huh ??

I called my local Zellers where I purchased it from and it is still $299.99 Canadian
Here Zellers has the Pioneer 220 for $450 Canadian. I wish it was only $300 here!

    What city are you in?

  9. Geez, I bought one from walmart for $250 about 3 weeks ago.

The VR mode has a very nice video editing feature, its fast and easy.

I Havent used the dvd-video mode.

Getting the udf drivers for the pc was a pain.

i extract video to the pc using tmpgenc editor, it lets you extract specific chapters.

The main downside is it has no zoom mode. so i still have to use my old apex for 16x9 playback with zoom.

the 220 has seperate slowmo forward and reverse buttons, which is nice.

works great with staples brand -rw !
    havent tried dvd-r yet.

I may return the 220 and get the pioneer 520 with an 80gig disk.

  12. Hi Brent G.

I saw the Pioneer 220 at a Zellers in Toronto, Ontario,
for about 287$ (canadian) about a month and a half ago.
So I suspect that they now sell them for 299$ as Koleman
reported earlier (I haven't checked though).

I don't understand how the same store chain sells the same item
at such different prices (299$ --> 450$!) in different parts of Canada.
One of the two prices must be a mistake, and you may want to
check with your local store again. You can find
the phone numbers of some Toronto Zellers on the web,
call them to confirm the 299$ price, and then let your
local Zellers store call them too

(off-topic: By the way, does any one know of a good retailer for
Liteons 5005 in Canada? Costco does not seem to carry them like
    they do in the USA)
    Quote Quote
  13. How about Best Buy? I know there is a location in St. Catharines... do the they have online sales in Canada yet?
    Quote Quote
  14. Well, they have BestBuy in Toronto too, but their prices are
usually just the list prices (with some occasional, minor rebates).

For example: they sell the Toshiba RD-XS32
    for 699$ canadian (=575 US$) this week.

The problem is that there does not seem to be serious
competition here (I think that BestBuys owns the other large
consumer electronics chain in Ontario, named Future Shop).

[In any case, neither of them carry the Liteons.]

    Thanks for the reply though!

(My apologies for being off-topic again)

  15. Ouch! Those prices in the Great White North suck.

I'm thinking you Canadians should take a road trip to the lower 48 and save some cash...

You're telling me. I'm thinking of getting a bus load of Canadians together and drive down to the States to pick up all those cheap DVD recorders and DVR's. Along the way I'm sure we'll be passing a caravan of Americans in buses going north looking for cheap drugs here in Canada. I don't know why we just don't meet in the middle and do a swap. 4 bottles of Viagra for a Pioneer 220. How about it Yanks?? We'll even through in a cow or two. They make great house pets, of course house training is your responsibility.

I purchased mine here in Langley, British Columbia, just outside Vancouver. They had about 6, which all seemed to be open already, so I dug to the bottom and got a fresh one.

I also found a Pioneer 320 in town for $425. Any idea if that is a good price?

  25. $150 is the lowest I've heard for a 220. The new models are coming out soon... that's probably why we're seeing these low prices all of the sudden. I saw some Panasonic E55's in BJ's a couple of weeks ago for $99.

  26. I didn't get very far with the Pioneer. I got it all hooked up. Hit the button to open the tray and the tray wouldn't open. It tries to open then makes a clicking noise. So much for a good deal. I don't know if I should take it back Monday for a refund or try and get it fixed. Looks like I'm back to my Ilo.

Return it, but have the Wal Mart folks find you another one at one of their other locations. They'll definitely exchange it no problem.

I found an open box Pioneer 220-S at Zellers(aisle electronics sale) for $265.00 a few days ago. Only missing the manual. But in mint condition otherwise. So the deals are out there. Hang tough.

The Liteons ARE available in Canada. Only in Toronto(center of the universe for Canada) apparently. But only here: www.PacificmallToronto.com. Search through it. I believe the store is AV electronics. I don't know if they do mailorder, but call them up.

Walmart has a 90-day, no questions asked, return policy. Return it to the service counter and you'll get a quick refund. This applies to ordered merchandise also. Just ordered one.
