I'm not gonna get into a pissing contest about which is 'better'.
the simple fact is -- Nintendo GameCube is the most powerful system on the market. unfortunately, the N64 gave them such a bad rep, now nobody wants to make games for their console

X-BOX is nothing more than a mid-level PC that you can't upgrade
the best 'argument' that most people have for X-BOX over PS2 is graphics...... big deal, i'm not a graphics whore
a crappy game is still a crappy game, it doesn't matter how pretty it is.
the games that are coming out right now for X-BOX are pushing that system to it's absolute limit -- you are not gonna see games getting better for the X-BOX

on the other hand, the PS2's full capabilities are still untapped.
think about this: there are STILL games coming out for the original Playstation - that's PS1
compare the games coming out NOW for PS1 to the original launch titles for PS1 -- they're light-years ahead
developers have said from day 1 that the PS2 is hard to program for. everyday they're learning new and better ways to use it's power
now compare today's PS2 releases to it's launch titles
    again, there's a big difference

    the X-BOX is dying....
why do you think they're bringing a new one out later this year?

for some good info, pick up the latest (April) issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly
EGM is one of the VERY few gaming mags that is actually unbiased -- they have a reputation for pissing off developers because of their brutally honest reviews of games. Several software publishers have recently pulled advertising (the magazine industry's biggest source of income!) because of this.

now, i must admit, a coupla my buddies have modded X-BOX's with chips & HUGE hard drives, and the idea of having emu's for almost every freakin' console ever made plus THOUSANDS of games all in one nifty network enabled online gaming machine is purty kewl

but i'm gonna wait until next year to pick up a PS3 and a Nintendo Revolution
I guarantee $ony and nintendo aren't gonna waste that extra year they have after X-BOX 2 comes out
Bullshit. Do some more reading bud. The date isn't official yet. As for the PS2...I believe it's the one that is dying since it's the oldest and can't be pushed graphically too much more.

    Get them both
Also you can stick a larger HD in both of them without chippping either one of them but both still require the knowledge to modify them though

with the PS2, only some Hard Drives are compatible
i had a couple of old HD's laying around and figured I'd stick one in, but neither would fit because of their connector configurations
the broadband adapter can only accept HD's that have the power plug and IDE plug right next to each other
both of my spare HD's have the jumper pins in between and won't fit

  5. Look at this way. look at the games you want to play and see what system has them. Also GameCub is a great system as well.

If you play EA games get a PS2. EA does a crap job in importing there games to other consoles.

Some games lag very bad on Xbox Live. like ESPN 2k5 NFL football. reason you log in to xbox live then you jump to another server live sega servers, same goes for EA sports games. If you play UBISOFT games or a Microsoft game the servers run great.

Ps2 online is free there is only one MMO that you have to pay for.

Xbox has a hard drive so you do not have to have a memory card.

    If you like RPGs PS2.

Also some people like one controller over another one. I say play both and see what one you like better.

Xbox 2 is said to come out this year. This will make XBOX 1 software start to die down in about a year. Same will happen for PS2 but PS3 will not be out until 2006.

IF you like 2D fighting games Xbox is better SNK does not like sony that much. Sony does not want any new 2D games on there system.

XBOX look alot better and sounds better, but its all about what games you want to play. Star wars RPGs are great on Xbox but the other RPGs I do not think are that good. PS2 most RPGs are good.

If you want online fighting games XBOX. Ps2 only has one online fighting games. Mortal Kombat. Xbox has street fighter Dead or alive and Guilty Gear

Gamecub is great for Nintendo games. Also RE4 is killer best game out in a long time..

Ps2 150 plus memory card, and you can use controller as DVD remote. Xbox if you have no plans for it to be used as a DVD, then its just $150.00 remote controller for Xbox $30.00 dollars

If you can wait for E3 and Xbox 2 then wait. If you can not wait and you like RPGs get a PS2 then this fall get a Xbox2. But GameCub I think you would really like it if you played there top titles more then the XBOX or PS2 top titles.

  6. Ok, first things first. I would like to thank everyone who responded and took the time with all the great advice. Very much appreciated.

Now, as it turns out, I think I may end up going with an xbox. Why? Because I know someone who is selling his (I'll just leave it at that).

I have backed up some PS2 games for a friend before (as he didnt have a dvd burner). I was fairly new to burning then (about 18 months ago), and as such, I had lots 'o problems. I know xbox games can be backed up as well. Is there anything I should know about backing those up, before I commit to the system?

He might be flashing the integraded bios chip on the Xbox motherboard. It's very risky but if you knwo how to do it, it's the cheap mans way of hacking.

    Actually its not that risky
(as long as you have the correct bios of the right size and you dont loose power while flashing)

Even if you turn it off during a flash a long as you dont unplug you can still recover (if you unplug or if there is a power outage you are screwed but not any riskier than flashing you dvd writer firmware though)

You can also do it with a softmod without even opening it up too

Xbox with only reading the title. It can move way more polygons per second than ps2, and the title selection has caught up as well.

    Lets not forget this.

Microsoft enlists 'Final Fantasy' creator for Xbox

What I read suggest he's working on Xbox2 titles.

true, which is why they continue to manufacture the 'larger' version, tho in much smaller numbers now, as some games (damn few) REQUIRE the hard drive unit

1.Easily modded with software or hardware(no solder required)
2.Plenty of utilities, homebrew games and programs to use on your modded machine
    3. XBOX live
    4. More new game titles every day
    5. which means more XBOX live

It's called a TSOP flash -he overwrote the original MS bios with a hacked one, the same bios you would flash onto a modchip. It's actually pretty clever, you just can't use XBLive anymore(unless you split the TSOP),as you would get a hardware modification error and a ban from MS.
Stick to a soft mod or buy a modchip it's easier and makes the XBOX very versatile.
Just shut up and listen dumbass

There are several other servers to play on besides the MS one.

    Yep I do all 3
tsop (Thin Small Outline Package)/bios flashes, modchip installs, and softmods
Most of my customers perfer the softmod since its cheaper than a chip and they can still play xbox live and its pretty quick.
(I also mod ps2s and do case customizations for people too complete pimpin with neons, controller off/on switches (xbox only), controller port lights and and underglow kits for xbox and ps2)

I really do love my xbox but I still love my ps2 (I am still. ps2daddy afterall)

There is room in the world for both

But none of them are as fun,and your not consistenly killed by game pros or cheaters.
Theres a huge membership, and XBlive appears to evenly match players skill levels, All round XBOX live is a very good gamer site.
I have had more enjoyment and been treated very well there.Better than any other online gaming experience I've had.
For me it's been well worth the cost

Well, to get back on the original topic: PS2. I already got me a PC (several, in fact) and don't need another, specially as it's low end, locked down and crippled by the manufacturer, in a attempt to get me to buy their software and hardware only.

I guess its all in what the person is looking for I just want to be able to use my backups never really cared about using live I liked the idea of free online with the ps2 and definitely didnt want to pay for it so I would probably use the free services on xbox if I ever seriously wanted to play and if that got annoying I would then probably checkout live

Its differnt strokes for differnt folks though do what you like
