  1. What say you peoples?

Looking to get one or the other. Cant decide which.

    Graphics are better on Xbox.
    PS2 has MANY more games.

Which one can be modded "easier" curiously?

    What would YOU get?

I bought an XBox only because a lot of my friends have one and I wanted to be able to play them on Live.

I think you can't go wrong with either one.

Supposedly XBox is coming out with a new machine within a year or so. Hopefully backwards compatible.

I would go the XBOX route because you can hack the heck out of it.

I have two Xboxes and they are both hacked. My kids can play Atari games, Mame32 games, Ps1 games and etc all from the Xbox hard drive. I use XBConnect to play online with others since Live does not let you connect with a mod chip enabled.

My neighbor has a PS2 and I agree there is a good selection of games, but after seeing them side by side and playing both, the Xbox is so much better in sound, graphics and comfort of the controllers.

Just depends on what all your kid's friends have the most of if you want him to share games and etc.

I'd go XBOX, only because I have one with a 200GB Hard Drive in it. Quite handy indeed

    I don't think there'd be anything wrong with a PS, though ....
    If in doubt, Google it.

  17. Ok, so it seems that Xbox is the more popular choice, mainly for hacking.

My question now is, what exactly is "hacking." All I thought I could do was put a mod chip in to play my backups. Oh, and putting in a bigger hard drive. But, what else can you do?

Sorry. Dont know much about game consoles. I havent had one since a SNES :P

There is plenty of "homebrew" apps for the Xbox. These include classic game system emulators, linux for xbox, hdloaders, mediaplayers. You name it... it's been put on an xbox.

  19. I love the emmulators, plus X Box Media Centre is brilliant. Plus once it has been modded you can play your games in high definition. Streetfighter 2 never looked so sweet.

Hmm, guess I didn't realize you could make a game done in max res of 480p go to full HD?

Mine doesn't even have a chip in it - apparently you can solder two points together, without needing a chip now. I can play burnt games as well as have a Hard Drive installed. Buggered if I know how my mate did it, but there's definitely no chip in it
    If in doubt, Google it.

X-BOX 2 (tentative name) WILL be out November 2005
it will NOT be backward compatible
I'm not gonna get into a pissing contest about which is 'better'.
the simple fact is -- Nintendo GameCube is the most powerful system on the market. unfortunately, the N64 gave them such a bad rep, now nobody wants to make games for their console

X-BOX is nothing more than a mid-level PC that you can't upgrade
the best 'argument' that most people have for X-BOX over PS2 is graphics...... big deal, i'm not a graphics whore
a crappy game is still a crappy game, it doesn't matter how pretty it is.
the games that are coming out right now for X-BOX are pushing that system to it's absolute limit -- you are not gonna see games getting better for the X-BOX

on the other hand, the PS2's full capabilities are still untapped.
think about this: there are STILL games coming out for the original Playstation - that's PS1
compare the games coming out NOW for PS1 to the original launch titles for PS1 -- they're light-years ahead
developers have said from day 1 that the PS2 is hard to program for. everyday they're learning new and better ways to use it's power
now compare today's PS2 releases to it's launch titles
    again, there's a big difference

    the X-BOX is dying....
why do you think they're bringing a new one out later this year?

for some good info, pick up the latest (April) issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly
EGM is one of the VERY few gaming mags that is actually unbiased -- they have a reputation for pissing off developers because of their brutally honest reviews of games. Several software publishers have recently pulled advertising (the magazine industry's biggest source of income!) because of this.

now, i must admit, a coupla my buddies have modded X-BOX's with chips & HUGE hard drives, and the idea of having emu's for almost every freakin' console ever made plus THOUSANDS of games all in one nifty network enabled online gaming machine is purty kewl

but i'm gonna wait until next year to pick up a PS3 and a Nintendo Revolution
I guarantee $ony and nintendo aren't gonna waste that extra year they have after X-BOX 2 comes out

  25. Very interesting reply Xylob. I appreciate the time.

The only thing stopping me from waiting for the PS3 or Xbox 2 is the price. When the PS2 came out it was $500. I dont have that kind of cash. I will assume that when the PS3 comes out, it will be around the same. Hence my reason for wanting a 2 or xbox. You mention a lot of great points though.

I had no idea the PS2's power was so under utilized. Very interesting how they are coming out with a new one when they cant even master the first two they have. Seems silly but its its all bout the money.

    Long Live PS2

P.S. I was a HUGE fan of Nintendo when (in the old days) all the FF Saga was there, but now, it seems that the only thing you can play there is "Mario's taking a crap" or something like that. Nintendo sucks this days.

yeah, this time around it's life-span won't be as great as the first one's, but don't count it out just yet
like I said, new games are still coming out occasionally for the PS1 (i'm sure that will stop soon tho, they're few & far between these days), I'm sure bargain titles for PS2 will continue to come out for at least another year or two after PS3's release

also, PS3 will be backward compatible with PS2 & PS1 games
as I said before, X-BOX 2 will not be backward compatible -- unfortunately, either will Nintendo's next system

It was probably hot swapped. There's some kind of way to hook it up to a pc and format the harddrive to work on the xbox... Not entirely sure though.... Then of course there's lovely SOFT MODDING

Uhm... the GameCube is NOT the most powerful. Its the least of the 3 as far as the tech inside it goes.

Also the xbox is much more then a PC. It uses many PC like componets but from a programming point of view its quite different.

Ram can be dynamicly allocated with easy. Also the way the memory bus is much better then on a PC. The PC would gain alot of the xbox design if it would't be murder on compatiblity.

There are also many mods to increase the RAM on XBOX. Replace with larger HDD. Put in different DVD-ROM. And I think I've even read where you can remove the stock PIII and stick a Taulatin PIII 1.3Ghz in it's place.

The XBOX has many options for hacking/customizing/modding.

It can be for more than just games.
