been using TMPGEnc and Super Dvd Creator as backup if TMPGEnc can't read the avi.
TMPGEnc encode avi 20% faster than Super Dvd Creator and apart from those avi + ogg audio avi movies that it can't recongize. TMPGEnc can read all other types of avi combinations.

any other good avi decoders to recommend?

VirtualDub -> frameserve to encoder. Do you have the ogg codec installed? On such occations where audio is a problem, you'd better extract audio, decode to wav, then use the wav as audio source for TMPGEnc.

Give CCE Basic a try, it is around $58.00. It is fast and does a good job.
