IPs are a tiny, miniscule, fraction of what admins have at their disposal to keep riff-raff out, and to .....umm ....limit ....their futures on the web and possibly among the free citizens.

Think about it - most people who run forums are well-versed in internet workings (I'm not yet, but I'm getting there quickly), and many people have been working long and hard for a long time to protect their stake ..namely their forums. And they share this with other forum owners ...and they have the backing of the internet policing bodies ....and the law. Websites are far from being "sitting ducks"

I salute all the hard-working geeks who have devised some of the safeguards available, and am a bit concerned about how some of them got to be so diabolical Until I had become an admin, I had no idea ......... 8)

So when someone whines about IPs, they're demonstrating how little they really know about the inner workings

    Not really

Some just think it is not worth the hassle.

  5. It also depends on what level you can get info from, if Baldrick opens everything up to the Mods then there is more they could do,But if you are just working from the "MOD" phpBB interface ,you can just go over there and see what they see and what they can do, ONLY from the "MOD" phpBB interface,Unless Baldrick gives them more server privileges.

ip is about all they can do short term - and that is totally useless anyway ...

ALL PHP and other type forum locks but a few have been broken (and those "safe" methods involves either encrypted sessions or a double network log in and even ip check with or without a key .. much as most IRC channels are 128 or 256 bit encrypted (some 1024bit also) that are used for some types of communication (often on more private networks))) ..

a person bent on this does not worry about "legal" aspects - NO ONE anywhere went to jail for disrupting a forum, they may (HIGHLY UNLIKELY) get kicked by their ISP, and someone who hacks into a forum is not going to worry about this anyway ...

    you are fooling yourself
