I'm new to this world and must say this site is quite amazing. I've spent the 2 day required waiting period absorbing mucho articles and reviews.

I have my heart set on the Canopus ADVC-100 or 110 but need to know absolutely if they will:

    1) Work with Win98se/Linux Knoppix
    2) What's the difference between the 2 models?
    3) Does the 110 disable the macrovision copy protection like the 100?
    4) Cheapest place to reliably purchase?

I know the 110 is brand new...and not much info may be available yet. I read the reviews (2) here already.

    Thanks so much.

    1. yes/yes/Mac too - It needs IEEE-1394 support and DV control.
2a. 100 has external power supply, 2nd set analog inputs in back
2b. 110 gets power from IEEE-1394*, has audio only mode

    3. don't know
    4. EBay

    * I don't like this because notebooks usually only have 4 pin IEEE-1394 (no power pins). I think the 110 has an optional power supply.

it will work with windows 98se but as i found out when i used windows 98se you will not be able to capture more than 4gbs. upgrade to windows 2000 pro or xp with the ntfs file system then you won't have that 4gb limitation.

Ahh...I was afraid of something like this since win98se doesn't support NTFS. I guess I'll have to buy XP. Thanks for the heads up.

Anyone know if the 110 gets by the macrovision copy protection like the 100?

    Thanks

Most decent capture programs can ofcourse capture into segments, so it does not need to be a real problem. Even now I still prefer capturing in segments.

I don't have a Canopus ADVC-110 but I had read posts in the past saying that the "trick" to by-pass copy protection like MACROVISION no longer worked as it did with the Canopus ADVC-100 but I haven't read anything about this in a while so maybe someone has discovered a way around it?

One solutioin would be to use a Full Frame TBC but then you are looking at $250 USD to $300 USD which is a bit high priced but then again a Full Frame TBC can be very handy not just for eliminating copy protection but for stabilizing the incomming video ... very important with VHS sources for instance.

The other option would be to go with the Canopus ADVC-100 instead or perhaps better yet the DataVideo DAC-100 which is pretty much a clone of the Canopus ADVC-100 but defeats copy protection like MACROVISION all the time ... no "trick" is needed.

As for the "trick" when using the Canopus ADVC-100 ... I was under the impression that it doesn't work all the time?

Feeding the signal through my DV camera (D8-TVR120pal) as passthrough does also work perfectly. Don't know how it works with other brands/models , but you can always try if you have the possibility.
