  1. Hello. I have a question that might seem stupid, but I'll ask anyway.
When playing a DVD in a software player (@23.976fps) I suppose that the video card has to perform a frame rate conversion to display it in a Monitor at something like 85Hz, right?
Well, if I set the refresh rate to 72, it would be synchronised with the video, so the video wouldn't have to be converted, thus one would get a more fluid motion (please correct me if I'm wrong).
BUT, on most of the LCD monitors with DVI connection, the max refresh rate is 60HZ and will not go lower than ~56 HZ, so there is no way of 'synchronising' the video with the LCD panel. So what could I do to correct this?

    Cheers.

You don't need to correct it. Refresh rate has nothing to do with framerate. Refresh is a monitor function. LCD panels are all 60Hz, at least in the US, AFAIK.

Adjusting the refresh rate in a LCD monitor won't do anything, except maybe temporarily disable the monitor. Adjusting the refresh rate in a CRT monitor just improves the performance of the monitor. 85Hz is a good rate for a CRT. 60Hz can cause some flickering with some CRT monitors. Higher is generally better.

  3. So you mean that it doesn't matter if the frame rate of a video is not in sync with the refresh rate of the monitor (LCD, CRT or both)?

  4. redwudz: Can you tell me how is a video card supposed to display 24 frames each second on a monitor that refreshes 60 times per second? There must be a frame rate conversion on the video card, otherwise one would see a lot of 'tearing', just like what happens in a game.
