  1. Hi,

I hope somebody out there can englithen me on this.

I m using both TPMGenc and Mainconcept MPEG Encoder to convert my AVI file to mpeg.

I know that most of the advice given here preferred to use TPMGenc.

But i got one problem, i noticed that mpeg converted using TPMGenc tend to be big - more than 750mb compared to Mainconcept MPEG Encoder.

For eg, for one of the AVI file i tested. TPMGenc's conversion of mpeg file read as 788mb but Mainconcept MPEG Encoder only need 450mb.

Why the different, for each conversion i adopt the default settings. upon testing, quality of the video seems to be the same.

This give me problem as i only want to burn it to VCD in one CD.

    Please help.

Being as they are both starting with the same source file and ending with the same product, IE, a MPEG-1 file, then the settings must be different.

Make sure the audio is the same format on both. The bitrate should be 1150 for MPEG-1, but the audio on one may be PCM and the other
    MPEG-1 Layer2.

I'm sure there will always be some difference in file size between the two encoders, but not that much. The default settings are probably different.

AVIcodec or Gspot may show you what the difference is between the two files.

EDIT: If you were converting to MPEG-2, I would say TMPGEnc was trying to use all the available room on the CD by upping the bitrate to fill the space. But the bitrate is usually fixed on MPEG-1 VCDs to 1150 to be compliant.

  3. Given all else being the same, Mainconcept will do it in half the time (or less).
