I have a Compaq Presario S6010V desktop computer
motherboard is a mis 6577 oem provided to Compaq
intel 845 chipset for onboard ide, audio and video
640 mb ddr ram
80 g boot hdd + 120g
winxp home pre-installed
RecordNow-pre-installed and Nero 6.6.05
Bought 2 nec 3520a 16x dual format, dual layer burners. Burners bought from different venders
If ide channel is set to use dma, then drive is config in ultra mode 2
Nero infotool reconizes the drive but the drive will not reconize any type of media
If burner is set to pio mode only, it sees all the media but then only burns at 1.7 to peak of 2x for dvd
Have tried 3 different brands of 8x media both + and - of each
Flashed the MB bios, clean install of both xp home and xp pro both with sp1
Returned pc to Compaq and they replaced the MB, checked os install and returned with nothing changed, problem still exists
NOTE! Support was great, free and quick, just did not fix the problem.
Have changed drive jumper from master, slave and cable select
Have moved from primary ide to secondary ide
replaced 80 wire ribbinns
installed alone on maxtor ata 100 ide controller which locked up system on boot attempt (card works with hdd through)
Burner works at 8x 4g=7:12 min when installed in an old 600 mhz sys which only runs win98 and shows drive as pio mode 3 using any of tried media and same Nero ver
Hdd are defraged and test 30+ mb min, 50+ mb max and 65 mb burst using HD-Tune

Tried uninstalling Nero, using NeroClean Tool and re-installing? I vaguely remember someone at cdfreaks having similar problems with a new NEC and Nero. Good luck.
Pull! Bang! Darn! -
I did not flash the nec burner as it has 1.04 the latest offical firmware available. advantage of haacked firmware mean nothing if it will not burn above 2x
yes I reinstalled nero after using the correct nero clean tool.
I have tried 5.5.10.05, 6.1.XX, 6.3.xx and 6.6.05
Also tried RecordNow and latest ver of dvdecrypter
The flash I did was to motherboard bios as directed by Compaq tech support..
Checked Intel website for drivers for the 845 chipset and they were the same as from Compaq.
I did a search at cdfreaks, videohelp and a general web one but did not find same issue.
The drive has high review, especally for ability to burn most any media.
I suspect it is a oem motherboard/bios issue but have no clue how to verify/check it. Compaq replaced the Mb with a new one already flashed to latest firmware and said they reinstalled chipset drivers with latest.
Mis will not support the MB as oem to Compaq. I am afraid to use thier bios flash upgrade and ruin the motherboard just to gain some better burn speeds. 1x &2x media for old nec 1300a are getting harder to find these days and it does not seem to like the 8x media, drops to 1x only.
I had put in a new hdd with clean win xp home install + nero when I sent in in for repair. Everything I can or know how to check seems to be the same as before. -
Problem seems an in-compatabiliy with dvd-rom reader on same ide channel.
When the reader was physically removed, then new burner works fine
FujiFilm 8x +r burned 4.1g from hdd in 6:00 min. Burn speed peaked at 13.1x using Nero with reg hack to show actual burn speed.
Thanks to all that tried to help and to Compaq also for thier efforts -
snafu i had the same problem with the nec 3520 on the same channel as my aopen 1648/aap drive didnt have a available ide to seperate so i bought a promise ultra 133 card put the aopen on that ide and now the nec works great, burns my ty 8x media at 12x using nero

You should check to insure that you are using an 80-pin IDE cable. The 40-pin ones don't work with faster DMA speeds. Also make sure you don't have the drive jumpers set to CSL (Cable Select). Set the first drive to Master and the second to Slave. This is a common cause of misery for people who upgrade older systems with newer optical drives.
