I'd like to burn some mpeg video files to disc so that they'll play on my DVD player. I guess mpeg means that I necessarily have to burn a VCD?

Since it's the first time I work with this format, I figured I'd better ask the experts how to get the optimal result, instead of maybe wasting time (and discs) trying to figure it out on my own.

of course I'd like to use nero.

    any advice u folks?
    thanks in advance

VCD, SVCD and CVD are all CD based, DVD is DVD (!) based. They all use mpeg as video; VCD=mpeg1, the rest mpeg2. They all play on most (to different degrees) DVD players.

AVI is fine - for computer use. There are more efficient codecs than mpg that can be used in AVI. Some DVD players also plays AVI, but as AVI is "just" a media container format which can contain almost anything, AVI capable DVD players only play a small subset of AVI. Video DVD otoh, is tightly specified, making it a simple task to create a player that covers all DVD bases. As the main ingredient in Video DVD is mpeg video, for DVD player playback, creating (or getting) an mpg video is desirable...
