    Hi

    I have PowerDirector and Vivo.

I want to capture an old elvis concert from the VHS.

When I capture it using the standard 4:3 capture profile the picture quality is unbearable. so I want to9 shrink it down to 16:9 hoping to get better quality.

PowerDircter wont let me the option to capture it using any frame siae that represents 16:9 aspect ratio.

So it seems that I should capture it in 4:3 and than find a way to convert it to 16:9. I saw a post with the same request but no details.

I have DVD-Lab pro….perhaps I can convert the aspect ratio there?

    Thanks

the only way you can "shrink" 4:3 video to 16:9 is to compress the image vertically, but i'm not sure why you'd want to do that because it would distort the picture to look squashed. generally, to convert to 16:9 from 4:3 you crop off the top and bottom of the picture. either approach can be accomplished with virtualdub. but i'll forwarn you, if you've got bad picture quality, taking more away isn't gonna make it look any better in the long run.

or resize the 4:3 capture so it maintains the aspect ration, but fits within the height of a 16:9 frame. Again, not an atractive proposition.

Why not just address the reason why the capture is so poor.

    Hi

First of all the show is elvis one… so we are talking about 40 years old video capture. Second the VHS itself is an old one..add to it the poor transition I provide (Vivo)….the low bitrate, the VCD compliant frame size.

Why I used low seetings? Because when I use better quality setting I lose frames. I guess it because of the VIVO, the USP cant handle all the task in one stroke.

i think I don’t have any batter bet unless I shrink the image so it look like 16:9.there is no doubt that the quality will be improved cuz the pixels are getting smaller as well.

I know that a stupid solution because I’ll get a very distort image….but until I get better one this the best way I can see.

    Thanks

False economy. Do you have access to a digital camera with analogue passthrough and a firewire card ? You should be able to capture as DV without dropping a frame. Then use avisynth or virtualdub to clean it.
