    Hello,

I have the Xwing Collector series (win95) on Cd and the Win95 Xwing Vs Tie Figher cd. Both are WIN95 games. I have WINXP SP2. I can't get them to install!!!!

I've been to www.lucasarts.com and looked around. They said they won't gaurantee them to work in XP. But I though XP was compatible with the 9x kernel???? What gives????

I downloaded a supposed patch for the games to work in XP but didn't work (not official however). So what can I do??? Their analyzer program even shows I have everything needed to run the game (obviously a celeron 2.66 can run a WIN95 game ).

I have also tried the "windows 95" compatibility mode on the setup file off the cd but no luck......

Anyone have a solution????? Any hope??????

If you have tried the compatibility mode and it does not work, then unfortunately you are out of luck.

It probably relies on dos and would not work.

You could create a new partition and install 98 on that second partition.

    It would then work.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the advice BAZOOKA

But I found this interesting post at lucasarts:

    http://forums.lucasarts.com/thread.jspa?threadID=30715&tstart=0

The file you need (autoexec.nt) can be found in your Windows\Repair folder; just copy it over to your

Windows\system32 folder and the game should install.

The guy who asked wrote back and said it worked fine but I did the same thing - the file was already in the system32 folder and all it did was overwite it with the same date and stuff.....

No hope for xp at all??????

None of my old Jane's fighter sims work with XP at all, neither does the entire Baldur's Gate series. I was excited to see what those old games would do with all the graphics cranked but they just wouldn't go. I second dual-booting with an older OS. I think Win98SE is the usual pre-NT-build favorite.

    Hello,

    Ugh.........

    Not sounding good......

I guess maybe I'll have to look into it....

So what would be the minimum for a win98 partition??? Would 5gb be enough if I only did a minimum install on the cd games so the partition doesn't fill up???

I currently only have a 80gb harddrive so I want to keep it open for my capturing and ripping projects....

    Thanks.

Do you only have the Windows version? If you have the DOS version also, try DOSBox. It's great for playing all those old abandonware games.

I have the DOS versions of all (or most) of the old LA games (Dark Forces, x-wing, etc.) and they work great.

  8. Yoda,

I tried the Xwing collectors a couple years ago on an older XP machine and it just doesn't work...sorry bud, it's either go with a dual-boot, or try to pick up an older machine just to wrangle your older games. FWIW, an older machine can be had in your local newspaper for about $100 or less....

Dualboot 98 is no hassle to set up, i expect most of us even have an old hard drive laying around....

    5Gb is PLENTY for a 98install, think it's about 250megs....

    Hello,

Thanks guys. I may get around to it in awhile.

This dualboot - how easy is it to operate once it gets going??? Is it just a selection 98 or XP??? One click???

BG2 just wouldn't boot up on XP Pro SP1 here, even with various compatability modes activated. I looked online and apprently some have gotten it to work using older video drivers and DirectX versions but I didn't want to backdate my PC like that.

    Hello,

It's interesting - a friend of mine is running XP SP2 and can get his copies of XWING 95 to run just fine....

From what I can tell are systems are essentially the same so I don't know what the difference could be...

BUT I did find this little program:

    http://scummvm.sourceforge.net/

It plays the old LUCASART game INDY 256 perfectly!!!! In XP!!!! (the 256 game was the game based on LAST CRUZADE).

So I'm hopeful I can find some way to get the XWING CD games to run - the WIN 95 updated versions.....

    Hello,

    http://boards.theforce.net/Games:_Board_and_Videogames/b10005/12830230/p1

    THIS WORKS!!!!!!!

It's VDMSOUND and a link is provided in the link above.

It will even play the floppy version of the ORIGINAL DOS XWING!!!!! Though I'm having glitches with DIGITAL SOUND. It stutters and goes nonresponsive when a TIE FIGHTER flyby soundeffect is triggered... ODD....

BUT I have the FIRST XWING collector CDROM - the dos one not the WIN95 remake (I have the 95 remake that I can't yet get to work....) and it works when RUN WITH VDM sound is used!!!!

It's great - no boot disk - especially since my emachine doesn't have a floppy drive!

Boy this is awesome - the scumm program works great for the old floppy indy type games from lucas and now this vdm works for dos cd games too!!! Though I had to del the "rem" description to enable "lh" for the cdrom to be detected in the ini file in the vdm directory - no biggie....

    Kevin

---ENJOY the old games now ---

    Hi,

I finally got xwing vs tie fighter to work in winxp sp2!!!!!

Turns out I had two problems. One was some thing happening when I shut down windows - trsdkd. Turns out it was with replay recorder that records streaming music. It doesn't shut down completely so that interferes with some installations. Once I removed that I was able to get the installation process to start.

But i had another error. The autoexec.nt wasn't going to let me install the older win95 games. Looked it up online and turns out I needed to restore the file from my xp install disc. Once I did that it worked!!!! now I can play xwing vs tie fighter perfectly! I also can play the collectors edition of TIE FIGHTER! Right now Rogue Squadron 3d won't play for some reason but it does install at least!
