Hi
I have always been able to copy ifo. and vob files to Ritek Printable G4 discs.
I updated my operating system from XP home to Professional. and I bought a new dvd writer NEC DVDRW ND-3500AG.
When I copied to a Un-printable Ritek G5 disc it played beautifully.
When I copied the same files to a printable Ritek G4 disc, on playback and approx 70% into playtime it started to freeze then carry on and freeze again -so basically I ended up with a coaster!
I then tried Datawrite Classic General Purpose DVD-R Discs but the same problem occured.
I am using the latest Nero 6. with full upgrades.
I even tried the much acclaimed DVD Juggler Professional version. and the same thing happened.
I am now very confused in understanding why it will play successfully on un-printable discs and not on printables?
Has anyone experienced this problem and is there any solutions please?
In otherwords HELP!!!

Hi
I read about doing the Nero tests, can anyone make sense of these tests? and can they advise me if these discs are OK?
I cannot find a solution yet to my main problem. -
I can't see your tests. Run transfer rate tests on your discs, you'll want a relatively smooth read speed for a good disc.
I will say, I've noticed a HUGE amount of problems with printable media in particular. I don't know why this is, I don't know if they're produced any differently, or if the extra weight of the printable surface is sometimes causing inbalances in the discs. I'm only speculating, but one thing I know for sure is that there's an unusually high number of problems with printable media - there's MANY threads on videohelp where media that typically works well in it's non-printable form has been nothing but headaches in its printable versions. -
Get some Taiyo Yuden printables and give it a go. I use the 8X TY -R printables and use DVD Shrink, Decrypter, and Nero - and the discs play beautifully. No errors, and the scans are excellent.
I recommend getting some TYs: order a sampler pack if you don't want to buy too many.
Good luck. -

The ones that 'seem' to play ok, after the second try or so, or on someone elses player, they crap up. As for the Datawrites, not sure which version you got, but from the media lists, they don't seem to be too highly rated either.
Do as Steve suggests and get yourself some TY's.
As for printables, I can recommend the hub printable TDK TTG01's that I have used for the past few months, and they have burned flawlessly to 100% capacity, 100% of the time. Not a single coaster from them.
The Riteks you've ended up with, I've found that burning up to 3.5gigs you have a watchable dvd, more than that....coaster. -
Sorry to disagree, however, the Ritek G04's I purchase now perform just as well as they always have in my Sony 510a burner. I have seen no degradation in the quality of Ritek G04 media for as long as I have been using them. I do not use media with labels applied to them - ever - if that is a consideration.

I've had some of the same issues you mentioned, but with different media and software.
Seems that I was getting 50%-70% thru a movie then it would skip/freeze when I switched from Fujifilm 4x +r media to Memorex 8x +r .... never any problems with the Fuji.
When I went back and burned the Memorex at 4x they did fine, so try dropping your burn speed with the same media and see if that helps.
My burner is a 12x +r burn so I didn't figure it wouldn't cause these problems, but dropping it to 4x atleast solved my problems for now with the Memorex media.

Hi All
Thanks for the advice, I will try the TY, also I noticed that there is a new Ritek Printable Disc which is G5 has anybody tried these? and are they any good?
Also, could you suggest the best price supplier in the UK for
Taiyo Yuden printables
Thanks -
Richie, I ain't the only one to say that Ritek has gone downhill. Checkout all the other posts. If you're happy with 'em, then good luck to you. Its your time and money.
Dolphins, wether its G04 or G05, its still Ritek. Same crap, two different guises. I found no difference.
Sabro, Memorex seems to manufactured by everyone and anyone who can churn out a dvd on this planet. Check out 'Memorex' in the 'media guide'. That to me means 'highly unreliable'. According to the guide your Memorex dvd+r 8x, are cmc Taiwan, and judging by the comments, not a lot of happy bunneys after using them.
I got a friend who's visiting the US to get me a shit load of TY's from supermediastore. Can't wait to get my hands on them. -
ritek-circa 2001/2003 quite good.
ritek-circa2004/2005 utter shit.-especiall the G05.
and they know it.
now there using CMC dyes, for ridisc and other assorted media,i have some CMC traxdata, and are going back as there all spot marks from whatever rubber sucker object the monkey used to pick them off the line.LifeStudies 1.01 - The Angle Of The Dangle Is Indirectly Proportionate To The Heat Of The Beat,Provided The Mass Of The Ass Is Constant. -

Hi All
Tried to find some TY discs but could'nt find any cheaper then 90 Pence each.
Then someone said if G5 unprintables were working for me try some
8 X PIODATA silver top printables, which I did.
First I checked them with DVDinfo and they are G5's.
Next I used DVD Shrink 3.2 which created an ISO image file and burned it using DVD Decrypter.
RESULT: 100% SUCCESS!! - no more Coasters.
Thanks for the input guys, I still like to know where I can buy TY discs at a cheaper price in the UK.
Any ideas? -

I don't know anyone using official (ie NOT HACKED) firmware on a Pioneer drive who has had problems with Ritek of late, although your mileage may of course vary ! -
Garry, if you mean by "mileage" how many gigabytes, I think most people expect 4.3 gig from a 4.3gig disc, not "somewhere around" 3.5gig from a 4.3gig disc. "Vary" is a dirty word in this case.
Secondly, have you seen the "interveiw with Ritek's markating manager" over on Media ? -
I fill my discs pretty much to the brim and still haven't had any problems with my Ritek discs. CMC, Princo and the like, yes - but certainly not with the Ritek. Plus the G series is one of the few dye types that will play on my aging Sony (which is still a damn good player apart from that and not due for a £30 replacement just yet...). Generally saying YMMV just means just because I've found one thing doesn't mean your findings will be the same.
I did see the interview, I seem to recall him saying mentioning public opinion of the media getting worse. Here in the UK, the media still seems to be decent, reliable mid-priced stock and I have not heard a single complaint from the UK about the decline of the media. Perhaps Ritek's distributors have taken to shipping their discs in microwave ovens to the rest of the world... !
