34% would be bad quality. Generaly, going under 70% will result in some quality loss, depends on what you are viewing it on if you will notice. If you are having to go below 50%, I would re-author and just select the main movie or split the DVD into two discs.

  3. How about this: Pick one of your store-bought DVD movies, say, a 2 hour one. Back it up in DVDShrink using defaults, output to an ISO and burn to an RW with DVDDecrypter. (Before you hit "Backup" in Shrink, note the compression!!!).

Play it on YOUR setup, whaddaya think? Very soon you'll be forming your own opinions, I guarantee it.

Kidding, but really, your own experience will be your guide. Nevertheless, 34% would indeed be shitty.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  4. I ran into a similar problem trying to back up "Carlito's Way" (54%, even with just the main movie and most audio/subtitles removed)... decided to make a DivX instead of splitting to 2 discs. Having a standalone that plays MPEG4 has its advantages.

  5. I've done some heavy compression with Shrink and you can get good results on heavily compressed stuff if you use 'max smooth' AEC, but it does take a long time to do the transcoding when using max smooth. I did a 37% and a 40% shrink with Recode a few days ago on some extras on a disc, the results were great considering the amount it was shrunk.
