I have avi files that mostly have, according to G-Spot, "640x272 (2.35:1) [=40:17]" for resolutions and aspect ratios. Previously I didnt alter anything as far as aspect ratios and resizing are concerned. When I watch the files on my computer as avi files, there are huge black borders. When I encode, author and burn these files to DVD using this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php After doing so the borders are still there and they are just as big. The video isnt stretched or anything but it seems like the borders just take up more room than needed. I have a 15.4" widescreen WSXGA+. If I was to watch a widescreen DVD that I buy at a store, the borders are about 1/3 to 1/5 the size of the borders that I get when I watch the DVD's that I made from the avi files. I would like to find a way to make it so that when I do encode and burn the avi files, the video will be resized to a more proportional widescreen. I have looked at multiple forum posts and am having trouble finding exactly what I need to do in order to accomplish my goal. I'm not very computer smart so if someone could dummy it down and tell me exactly what I need to do, that would be great. These are the posts that I have been reading: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=258721

In those guides, I understand the math itself but sometimes I dont understand why or where the numbers are coming from. Or once I have the numbers, what do I do with them to resize or do whatever to my avi files.
I've been trying virtualdub and I'm willing to try AVISynth if someone is willing to explain to me how it works. I use TMPGEnc Plus to encode, TMPGEnc DVD Author to author, Nero to burn.
