  1. I have a large MPG that has been converted to VCD format. The problem is that it's too large for a CD. How do I burn a VCD to a DVD disk?

I have Roxio 6 CD/DVD Creator installed. When I use DVD builder to create a VCD, I'm forced to choose DVD as the destination disk, and then the software re-encodes the 800MB MPG file into a 5GB DVD VCD. I've burned VCDs before using Roxio 5, and the size on the disk was always about the same size as the size of the MPG I started with. What's up with Roxio 6?

If your VCD mpeg file is "Standard VCD Bitrates", then I'm assuming it is ~80 minutes. This will burn to a 700mb CD-R as long as your burning software is burning it as a VCD. Just don't use any large mpegs as menus, and you should be fine...

  3. I don't know how to explain it any better. The MPG file is 800MB. When I go to burn it as a DVD (no menus, no extras, etc.), Roxio tells me it won't fit on a 4.7GB DVD disk. I tried it anyway, and I ran out of space on the disk.

Apparently the MPG file isn't at the standard bitrates, so how do I get it to the standard rates? I've already run it through TMPGEnc.

Try Tmpgenc dvd author. Roxio probably wants to reconvert it.

What software did the mpeg conversion to VCD format? can you tell what the attributes of the VCD video are? mpeg-1, 352x240/288, 1150bkps, 44.1khz mpeg audio, etc... (does it list any settings that look similar to these numbers).

Do you have a DVD disc in your burner? maybe that's why it is forcing you to create a DVD? What if you put a CD-R into the burner and select a VCD Template (I don't have that software, so not sure where to look for the template settings)

800mb of Standard VCD video (about 80 minutes) should burn correctly to a 700mb CD-R (but the software must be burning it as a VCD).

    EDIT:
if you just want to create a DVD instead, then check what the attributes of the encoded mpeg will be for your dvd. Depending on your video length, you adjust the bitrates accordingly for the video and audio. For instance, if your video is 80 minutes long, then your COMBINED video+audio bitrate for DVD5 cannot exceed roughly ~7600kbps (use the bitrate calculator here to calc your bitrates).
    https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

But to re-encode for DVD, I would recommend to use the original video (and not the video that was already encoded to VCD format).

  6. The video is only 45 minutes long. That's why I can't figure out why it won't fit on a standard CD in VCD format.

I used TMPGEnc to convert the AVI file to a VCD MPG. That converted a 350MB AVI file to an 800MB MPG file. When I go to burn it as a VCD using Roxio, Roxio tells me the file is too big to fit on a CD (obviously), but if I insert a DVD disk, Roxio wants to make some sort of conversion/re-encoding, and the resulting file is over 5GB, too large for a DVD.

I can't figure out what's going on here. The 800MB MPG file has the same attributes (bitrate, etc) as a 350MB VCD-ready MPG.

I just want to create a standard VCD with this file.

if it is only 45 minutes long, to be that large must mean that it is outside the "Standard" VCD specifications (probably the bitrate is too high). Did you use the VCD Template, or did you set the attributes yourself?

Some Authoring packages will allow you to burn an xVCD (where you use bitrates outside the normal specs). But some application do not allow you to burn xVCD.

For 45 minutes, you must be using LPCM audio and a very high video bitrate to NOT fit on a DVD5 disc. Are you using templates for your DVD? If not, can you switch to mpeg or dolby digital audio instead?

Something is wrong though -- because a 45-minute VCD should not be 800mb -- I would think it is more like 450mb using the "Standard" VCD settings.

  8. I used the standard, default settings in TMPGEnc. The bitrate fields were all grayed out. I just browsed to the AVI file and started the conversion.

Making a VCD using TMPGEnc's default settings is wrong.

A 45 min movie shd give you abt 450MB of VCD MPEG. Anything else, you broke something.

    1. Start TMPGEnc
    2. New Project
    3. Load AVI into TMPGEnc.
    4. Load template, select NTSC or PAL VCD template (recommends NTSC if fps = 23.976 or 29.97, PAL if fps=25, or simple multiple of fps)
    5. Change quality settings if you want (recommended).
    6. Encode.
    5. Burn to 74/80min CDR.

    Tata.
    XEQ.
