Something's not right. I defrag maybe twice a month after I have moved a few thousand files back and forth. Even before defragging, I have never noticed any slowdown or problems.
What do you mean by 'low performing system files'?
What program are you defragging with?
How full is your harddrive? -
What is the best defragmenter program around? Any freeware?

O&O Defrag is the shiznit!
the Diskeeper that comes with Windows is not the full on app, and quite frankly, sucks badly.
you should definitely shell out some cash on a beetter defrag prog than what comes with Widows - even if you upgrade to the 'real' Diskeeper."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

You worry way too much about things.
Like I told you b4, the hard drive is always spinning and data will get written whereever there is free-space. This is natural. The data is not written all in the same space on the disc. It is scattered throughout the hard drive.
Defragmenting helps with performance as it moves the fragments closer to each other so that the file will launch faster.
Unless you are constantly ripping dvd's or doing video editing, you do not need to defragment so much.
I would dump diskeeper.
You should only defragment about once a month. -
Once a month with NTFS maybe... personally I'd recommend once a week with FAT32! At least if you want optimal performance...
