Need an external case for dvd-rom drive, which/where to get?

I am buying another dvd writer tomorrow. I currently have a hp300i, and a pioneer dvd-rom in my computer. I want to take out the dvd-rom drive and have both burners set in the tower. What I ultimitely would like to do is use the dvd-rom in an external case using either USB2.0 or Firewire to rip my dvds to my HDD to keep from wearing on the burners. The dvd-rom reads @16x/hp300i@12x/Benq1620@16x.

1. Is it actually possible to put a dvd-rom drive in an external case?

2. Will ithe dvd-rom drive still be as fast at ripping as it was in the computer. Or will it atleast be faster than the 12x HP?

3. I keep hearing that USB2.0 transfers more data than firewire, but firewire actually is faster? True/Untrue?

In theory USB supposedly transfers more. But FIREWIRE is faster and has less compatibility issues than USB. If you're going to use a external enclosure get a combo FIREWIRE/USB and make sure the chipset is OXFORD 911. Bytecc external enclosures are good from newegg.com. I just picked up a Bytecc aluminum firewire enclosure for one of my 200 gb hard drives. Bytecc does have a enclosures for DVDRW, DVDROM.

Go get yourself a LIteon or something and get an external case from newegg.com.

Get one with both USB 2.0 and Firewire if you can afford it. I Like firewire personally.

my bytecc model- me-720f enclosure uses Oxford 911 chipset that houses a 200gb hard drive and the other bytecc model- me-740u2f uses prolific chipset that houses another 200 gb hard drive. difference between the two models is the prolific chipset enclosure is aluminum and the oxford chipset enclosure is plastic although newegg's description says it is aluminum and it isn't.

i purchased the bytecc me-740u2f prolific chipset enclosure from a local pc shop because it was only a $3.00 difference compared to newegg.com. i didn't want to wait 4-5 days to receive the enclosure. the only thing about this enclosure is the damn blue led light is BRIGHT! other than that it works fine.

I've got a couple firewire/usb combos enclosures, bytec prolifics, which are plastic and seems to be working nicely. Has a built in fan as well. Thankfully the light is a mild green and blinks orange when the harddrive in one is busy. I'm personally more interested on what the light on the lite-on cd drive in the other one means. Its green when reading, and when burning normal discs goes orange, while when burning special discs, like a securom protected disc with alcohol 120 it lights up red. I'll have to look into that one more.
