  1. I'm following the jonesgroup DVD WS2 tutorial.. which is pretty straight-forward. i'm converting/re-encoding avi to DVD. I realize I can use an encoder, but I wanted to see what DVDWS2 can do respects re-encoding quality. (oh, btw, I could not get the "Advanced" tab to appear in the Global Settings that the jonesgroup tutorial accomplishes).

My source is ~1.5Gb .avi file, 720x480 @ 1852kbps, 2.0ch ac3 audio. I made a custom DVD template in DVDWS2: 720x480 @ 3000kbps constant, ac3 256k, 48khz (??). I follow steps in tuturial, create simple menu, create an iso image.. As encoding is taking place, my computer is very loud (chip intensive??).. then about 1/2 to 3/4 way thru, DVDWS2 just quits with a message: "Abort (operation)". I've attempted 2x with same abort message. Can someone please advise as to what the heck i'm doing wrong..

I'm on a WinXP Pro SP2, P4 3.0G, Asus mobo, 2G memory, couple of burners, etc..

Is that the Full or Express version of DWS2?

Have you applied all the patches available from Ulead's support pages?

What type of .avi is your source video? divx, xvid, other? Is it roughly 97 minutes long?

Do you have menu music in your project? If so, try it without the menu music.

Look in your DWS_TS folder to see if the main movie was successfully converted to .mpg (there will be subfolders named CvtTitle, and the converted videos will start with a "~" symbol). If those are complete, you can use them in a new project, and won't have to sit through an entire re-encode of your original source video...

  3. Firstly, thank you for replying..

    1. Full version (and no patches--just got it the other day and neglected to patch--will do that tonight)

    2. The original avi is Xvid and is ~45mins in length. (actually I think size is just under 1.2Gb).

    3. As to which folder.. from memory, I'm not sure which folder I checked. but do know that the folder that I did check had an mpg file, which kept progressively getting larger (which made me think, yes, it's working/encoding). But when I went to that same folder after 'abort' msg, the folder was empty..

So I should specifically checking the DWS_TS folder for the end mpg iso file, correct?? and then burn that to DVD, using Decrypter, etc.. ?

actually, the .iso image will be in a directory you specify during the burn step (not necessarily in the DWS_TS folder). I only mentioend the DWS_TS folder for you to check if the video was completely converted -- if so, you can save time if you need to do it again by just using the encoded .mpg file in the CvtTitle folder (it's named something like CvtTitle01 -- don't quote me on it).

The DivX and Xvid .avi's have caused issues with other users, so not sure what to do if it's exiting before the video gets fully encoded...

  5. OK and thanks. I think I'll just use TMPGEnc to convert the avi to DVD.. and will continue to tamper with WS2.
