  4. Answer form :

The difference is that DVD (insert your math sign of choice) R/RW is better than DVD (insert opposite math sign) R/RW. (Insert number) companies support DVD (insert your math sign of choice) R/RW, while only (insert other number) support DVD (insert opposite math sign) R/RW. Anyone who says DVD (insert opposite math sign) R/RW is better is smoking weed! Long Live DVD (insert your math sign of choice) R/RW!

Seriously, I have a burner that now supports both + and -. It's getting to a point where it is almost a matter of getting quality media that is the most important issue for burning and playability.

This is outdated, but I thought I'd post it for anyone that's new to comparing the two formats, there's some info that someone might find of use I suppose.

Except that only one is a math sign. The other is just a dash/hyphen .

My personal experience - I am finding +R to be more compatible with home DVD players than -R.

This has been true from all my burners - NEC 2500A, NEC 3500AG, Plextor PX-712, and all software - Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and Nero 6.3.x.x and Nero 6.6.0.x.

I now use -R discs for data, and +R discs for DVD video and movies.

  8. If you use a PC +/- burner, there is no big difference between + and - media.

Only if you use a standalone DVD recorder without HDD and record from TV to DVD RW media, then there is a big difference:

    Minus RW format:
You can either create a disc, that is compatible to most DVD players (Video format), or you can edit the disc (VR format). But you can not edit AND have it compatible.

    Plus RW format:
You can edit AND have it still compatible to most DVD players. Exception: A wide screen signal from a digital settop box can not be stored in a compatible way.

Unfortunately, in the mid 90s the DVD forum created the DVD video format in such a way, that it can not be completely compatible to a recording format, and millions of DVD players appeared on the market, that can not playback the recording format.

Some drives may burn one type better than the other. It is usually better to stick with Plus on Philips based drives (such as BenQs). Since you can booktype it to -ROM, it should offset any compatibility advantages that Dash R(W) discs may have.
