Try burning them at a lower speed (8x).

Sounds like low quality discs. Low quality discs often have issues towards the edges of the disc. Burning at a slower speed may help (4-8x).
Otherwise look for some different media.

FYI: If you are actually trying to burn at 8x or even 16x, I would recommend not multi-tasking, and ensure your HD is defragged. Your PC has to quickly move a lot of data at 8x and some burners are better at handling buffer under runs than others.

When useing DvdShrink I set the taget disc size to 4100. Yes it means higher compression but hopefully avoids the poor burn at end of disc.

Since I have not used the full capacity of the media, I also do not have a problem doing a disc to disc on the fly copy using different media with small but signifficant data capacity.

    -r = 4389
    +r = 4381
I think thats right or at least close
Full -r will not fit on +r

If I only had a nickle for everytime this is asked!!

    Use good media

Reduce the max disk size in the DVDShring prefferences by about 100-150 MBs Use movie only for all your back ups and you'll be surpriced what you can easily fit.

I use Shrink to ISO and burn the ISO with DVDdecrypter. I read in one drive and directly burn with another.

Do not run anything during the burning.

    Did I mention GOOD media!!!!

Don't play you backup in a PS2 - They can be picky. Use real player

Don't assume that if a given DVD player does not LIKE your back up, that it ha a problem. It's might be the player. Try another player. I have a Magnavox that doesn't even like store bought disks let alone burned one. Yes it is a piece of crap but it's one of those integrated DVD/Surround Sound sytems. All other players play ALL my backups.

Once again,, GOOD MEDIA is the secret. But even that will NOT guarantee consisten results. You will have a coaster here and there.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

just to add a couple more...

-avoid going much higher than a total bitrate of ~7mbps (video + audio)
-avoid using those dvd sticky labels
