Anyone know of a freeware program that converts wav or mp3 to a midi format?

  2. I don't think it can be done. MIDI is a Music description language which allows a program to 'render' or generate the notes using predefined voices or instruments. Converting from simple digital audio (mp3 is compressed but the player generates an uncompressed audio stream before it is sent to the soundcard) to a descriptive language like MIDI is not practical. If there are any applications that attempt this I doubt they will be very accurate or reliable.

there are, and they are terrible.

even when using a monophonic input like a mono synth, where it's not trying to decipher complex chords, the results are still sloppy and not very good.

do a google search on "wav to midi" and you'll find some free- or trial-ware. good luck.

Buy a phone that allows you to use wav or compressed audio files as ringtones. Any phone running Nokia Series 60 software or Microsft Smartphone software allows this. As do a few others.
