I've been sent a .mpg file by my friend, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work properly on my computer. Let me explain.

I tried playing it in Windows media player and it came up with the message that the file format is unsupported. But it plays in the VLC media player (according to VLC's stream info the file is mpga - whatever that is). I loaded the file into GSpot, and it comes up as a RAR file (which I know it isn't).

So why don't I just play it in VLC, I hear you ask - well I could, but I really want to put this file on a DVD via TMPGEnc DVD Author (which also won't open it).

Am I missing a certain codec or is this file going to be useless?

    Thanks for any help.

Just to be certain, rename the file extension to .RAR and see if you have a true rar file. Perhaps VLC is smart enough to decompress it in that format.

    Damn I feel embarassed now.....

Thanks for that Soopafresh, it was a .rar file. I just presumed it wasn't due to the fact that VLC played it.
