I know this can be a debatable issue but just between those two formats
DVD-R or +R but with ROM booktype?
Is a +R disc with ROM booktype as reliable to record? Are they more 'error prone' than straight DVD-R burning?
On an NEC 3520 burner....

Probably about the same in modern players, DVD-R is probably more compatible in older players. Setting the book type makes a player believe it is a DVD-ROM, which might make it play a disk it would otherwise reject. It does not, however, make it a DVD-ROM, so while it might not spit it out, it might not play it very well.
Aside from changing DVD-ROM bit, the recording process is still DVD+R.Read my blog here.
