I have Dr. Divx and have no problem converting an .avi file to Divx but I tried converting a short film (something a band I work with made - not a copyrighed commercial video) to divx in the hope I could shrink it down really small (maybe emailable) and I got an error saying to make sure I have the divx codec installed (I do). I copy the video folder from the dvd to my desktop and then added the file to Dr. Divx and it doesn't work - it also said there was no audio (which there is). I'm confused.

Dr.DIVX can be erratic on VOBs and MPEGs.

It often can't find the audio in these files, so in this case I usually demux the streams and load the video stream, and when it's finished analysing the video and says there's no audio, then select 'Other' audio and load the audio stream.

It can also have trouble with multi-part files so it's good practice to join them into one if possible, before loading into Dr.DIVX.

It's not foolproof, I've had mpegs that no matter what I do Dr.DIVX can't load, and I've had to convert them using something else.

Or, is this for joining the files?

I use VDMOD for encoding DIVX and XVID. Works great. It will join AVIs, but I never had any luck joining MPEGs.

The encoding is done by the encoder codec. (DIVX or XVID) VDMOD or DrDivx are just front ends for the codec.

For DIVX, I demux the audio with VDMOD and encode it as MP3 audio with Audacity (Free), then select that audio file in VDMOD and encode the video while VDMOD adds the audio.

If you have two files, you can then join the DIVX files with VDMOD in direct stream mode without any more encoding, this only takes a minute or two.

One last question. Just for kicks, I tried to open a .avi with VDMOD and it said it couldn't (I can get the exact message if needs be). I think I remember using plain VDUB for spliting an houh .avi into 2 to back'm up on DVD. What changed?

Looks like you need something like the Panasonic DV codec. VD needs that to open a DV file.

EDIT: Also DV-Type 2 works better with VD and TMPGEnc, if you were using it. There is a DV-Type 1 to DV-Type 2 converter in the 'Tools' section under 'DV' if you need it.

    Thanks!

When I capture video from my mini DV recorder, the default must be DV-1 - correct?

Is it possible I didn't have that problem with regular VDUB?

I checked back with an old post of mine about spliting .avis and it seems I didn't run into a problem with DV type 1 I wonder if I was capturing differently....Using Movie Maker now...was using Ulead...

    This true:

WARNING! Apparently this tool will only work properly for files less than 4GB in size.

Ok, yes, that warning's true - 53 mins in I get hissing

And, as I suspected, with Virtual Dub 1.6, I get no errors opening Dv type 2. Why only with the mod?

Is the version if VDUB different with the mod one?

Anyone know who to convert DVD to Divx with the Divx Converter?

I have the right plug-in, but draging the video ts file on the converter doesn't work.

I gave up on Divx Converter as it doesn't seem to be too configurable. If I'm converting a DVD to Divx, I've been using Fairuse. Not many options there, either, but I like the results. AutoGK seems popular and probably has the most adjustments for quality.

VDMOD is based on VD 1.5.10.1. If you don't use MPEGs that much with VD, VD 1.6 may be a better choice. I just use VDMOD because it's convenient and more versatile for my uses, but other versions are probably better suited just for DIVX, XVID conversions.
