Hi everyone, this is my first post.
I have a problem capturing video with Vegas 5. I have my VCR connected to my camcorder Sony camcorder (Digital 8 ) via firewire. Windows does recognize my camcorder. As I am trying to capture video, there is audio but no video in the preview window nor does it allow me to press the "record" button. In fact, the video plays for 2 seconds and it stops while you can here the audio. Instead the preview window says "Please insert tape" with "need help? click here". I try to reconnect to the device and still the same thing. Do i need a plug-in or what?
Thanks

Is the quality better using this program versus windows movie maker? And should i use type 1 or type 2 avi. I want to burn a 2.5 hr video onto a dual layer dvd.
-
quality is the same - the compression is done in the camera ...

what would you guys recommend...avi type 1 or type 2? I have been using windows movie maker for a while, what did that use (avi type)?

If using WINDV make sure to check your audio sync near the end of your long captures >45minutes.
Sony Camcorders(including mine) have been known to have issues with these programs when using passthrough mode due to lack of an audio lock feature.(there are some good threads explaining this.)
I have heard if you capture type 1 that it sometimes fixes the problem.
But if you don't have the issue then don't worry. -
I just checked the file and it is a bit off. Is there a way in correcting this problem with sound or do I have to re-record?
-
ok.....i see that I have to use virtual dub to correct it. Does Virtual dub do the same thing (audio sync problems) when capturing video or will it be fine? Does virtual dub also give me an option to record on type 2 avi?

Your Vegas 5 capture probably has DV device control set to on. When captureing in pass-thru mode, you want the camcorder to remain inert. You will be manually controling the VCR and "Capture Video" buttons.
Under Capture window, Options, General, the first line "Enable DV device control" should be unchecked for pass through. This also applies when transcoders (e.g. Canopus ADVC) are used. -

There are ways to fix the audio issue in Audacity and Goldwave(both free) but I try to avoid this issue all together and don't capture to WINDV, DVIO, or DVAPP.
What I have tested that worked is Ulead VideoStudio, Premiere, Vegas, and Scenalyzerlive, choose your poison. Havn't tested windows built in Movie Maker so don't know on that one, didn't have winXP back then.
Good luck. -
wooohooo!!! DONE! I unchecked the "enable device control" and it works awesome! Ill be using Vegas now on for capture! I just have a follow up question ...does vegas capture in type 2 avi or will i have to convert it into type 2 avi? I have "dv converter" to do my conversions and will I lose video/audio qualtiy when converting?
-
Vegas captures type 2.
And no you don't lose quality using dv converter.
