I have a foreign film but the subtitles are small and in the centre of the picture - which is daftas it is 16:9 anamorphic.
I want to make the subs bigger and so have run SubRip and tried the character recognition way.
The problem is that SubRip keeps recognising parts of a character and it is nearly impossible to teach it the letters/characters properly... maybe because the subs are so small.
Does anyone know how I can rip the subs, make them bigger, and slot them back into the VOBs?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

(PS) Yes I have read the guides but most of them use subrip.

I take it, you have a DVD as source? If so, your route is the only one I know - you have to rip to text format, then reauthor. An alternative might be to find the subs as text (.srt or .ssa or...) on the web, to skip the extraction phase.

Mat,
thanks alot for the reply!
I have the original DVD as source, but when I rip the subs using VobEdit, I get a .sup which I cannot convert. (subtitle workshop wont convert it).
I need to get a sub or txt file as you say but cannot find a way.
Cheers.

A .sup is just the raw subtitle stream (which consists of a # of still images, one for each subtitle). To get it in text format, it has to be OCRed, and to that end, SubRip is the brightest star. If SubRip doesn't hack it, then finding the subs on the web is the only way I can think of to help you on your endeavour.

Cheers again mats,
as mentined in my first post, subrips character recongnition does not work well at all on these subs.
I am stuck!

No you're not. You could retype and time them yourself. In the end, it's all up to how dear this is to you...

True mats thanks.
It is dear to me... its Jackie Chan latest Hong Kong flick that I got imported but the subtitles are crazy. They seems to display as if they were being shown on a 4:3 screen.
Anyway, I got a great idea!!!!
I have totally messed up the heights (etc) in the sub rip OC to txt character setup.
By doing this, it will recognise NON of the characters and so asks me to type the whole line.
This saves me the trouble of having to time it, I just need to type out the text and subrip should fit in all the correct timings... Owzat?
Do you think it would work?

THANKS FOR REPLYING TO MY POSTS MATS, IT HAS BEEN A GOOD HELP TO ME AND IS APPRECIATED -

long job but easier thatn writing them from scratch and timing it yourself!!
but as matts said depends on how good a result you want / need!!

It could definately work - like you say, it takes the timing trouble out of the picture, leaving you with the text.
However, there ought to be some srt (or other text format) subs floating around the web - I'd surely go to great length hunting high and low before starting to retype everything!

ta zworg2.
I got some subs from the web but they are aweful... they seems to be translated from cantonese to english and are very poor.
Just settling down to type it all out myself... OH WHAT FUN!!!
cheers again.
