    looking for some background motion software to create motion backgrounds. I want to lay stills on them and use them for my photo montages.

    You could try Wax - it's free. Or download some - Sony has some, and Mainconcept release a handfull every month. It's all abstract stuff, but full frame.

    You could also play around with the various effects in your editor (most have something) to create your own.

    Having said that - After effects is exactly the tool for this work if you have the budget and intend to do this commercially.

    i recommend learning avisynth it's powerful and free but has a learning curve. Zweistein is a pretty free video editor. Movie DV is a mid range $50 ish good video editor.
