I am new to this. But, I was able, using Nero 5.5, to make a backup copy of one of my store bought DVD's just using the burn image function. I burned the DVD to a DVD-RW. It played in my DVD player, with full menu options. Is there some reason why this is never discussed on the how to pages? Is this a bad way to duplicate the DVD?

It is never discuss becuase A) Most movies being now are larger than the 4.7 GB DVD-Rs & DVD-RWs on the market..B) Was your disk CSS or Macrovision protected??..C)lastly, its never discuss as this is mainly a VCD/SVCD site..not DVD
Now having tried this myself...Im highly interested in your steps on how this was accomplished, because I was not able to do it. So please explain?
