I can't remember any of the actors in the film but I do know the plot. It's a black and white film from the 40s or 50s ... a comedy drama. The lead character is a gangster who has reached an age where he wants to retire. And, the one thing he'd always wanted to do was write his memoirs ... detailing his crimes and how he always managed to stay one step ahead of the cops and was never arrested. So, he hires an elderly woman to take dictation. The movie dramatizes the stories he dictates.
After he's finished, he's surprised when the elderly woman flashes a badge (FBI) and arrests him. But, during their time together, she falls in love with him and marries him in prison.
Title, please?

I think it was called "The Capmaster Story."
Seriously, I hope you find out the title because I vaguely remember it too. -
I tried every permutation of, "gangster, fbi, memoir, write, dictation, woman, retire, marries, prison, crime and arrest" that I could think of at IMDB and couldn't find it, or anything resembling it

That's not really much to go on and there were a lot gangster films made during that era...that's probably why you're having a hard time finding it.
I could probably help if it was from '60s on, but the '40s - '50s era just didn't interest me much as far as movies are concerned.
Was this a movie you saw on TV, cable, video, theater? -
