I have an .avi file with working audio, which I convered to a dvd compliant mpeg file. I looked it over in avi info and it says it has mpeg1 layer 2 audio. But when I play it with, windows media, mplayer, powerdvd it has no audio output whatsoever and my pcs audio card is working fine because other videos/mp3s play the audio fine so obviously it's the codec in avi info it suggested I go to a french site but you can't download the specific codec which I need it alows to download a codec pack but I don't want everything in that codec infact I only need the audio codec (I think). I searched this site for the codec because apparently ffdshow doesn't work for some reason but the only thing I could find was codec packs which I do not want. All I need as an mpeg1 layer 2 codec, aother note about mainconept, when I open the program it opens up ffdshow because in the task bar (bottem right) there are two ffdshow icons one is for audio and and the other for video how do I get ffdshow to work? I have already tried uninstalling and re-installing but it still does not want to work. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

An avi with mp2 audio? Not exactly common. ffdshow can decode mp2 audio fine, even windows comes with an mp2 decoder.

What do you have ffdshow set to? libmad or mp3lib?

No, the avi didn't have the mp2 audio. After I converted the avi to mpeg (dvd compliant) with mainconcept it encoded the audio to mp2. and I believe ffdshow was to set mp3lib, Is that what my problem is?

Sounds like the audio was just lost during conversion.

But avi info and gspot both said there was audio in the converted mpeg file. I tried converting it about 4-5 times with and without ffdshow installed and once re-installed, and I still get a mpeg video file that shows it having audio according to gspot and avi info but the sound doesn't play when the video is played. Gspot and avi info both said there was a detected supported codec for running the type of audio even though it doesn't actually run. When I press the render button in gspot I get an error. I can longer produce this error because I delelted the bad file. BUt I don't want to convert again until I know it's going to work properly.

Exactly. It has an audio stream, but no audio... just silence.

  7. Try uninstalling FFDSHOW.Then reinstall and uncheck mp3 in audio formats when reinstalling.
