  1. Could be power supply. I have had sudden reboots due to power supply.

    You got it! I switched it back to pio on the secondary IDE cable, and it works just fine. I have already updated the drivers for the motherboard, any other ideas?

    Glad to hear that worked. Do you have any other devices on that ide cable?

    DMA signaling is much faster than PIO so it's much more susceptible to noise and reflections. Here are some other things to check:

    Make sure you have an 80 wire ribbon cable to the DVD recorder, not a 40 wire cable. 80 wire cables have much less crosstalk between conductors so you get better transmission.

    If you have only one device on that cable make sure it's at the end of the cable not in the middle of a 3 connector cable. An open ended cable gets lots of reflections off the unterminated end.

    I have 2 devices on it, but I might only be running the 40 in instead of the 80. I'll have to try a new 80 cable and switch back to DMA and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for all the help.
