  1. I've been using VSO to convert avi's to DVD and getting some decent results, but since trying out Mainconcept, all I get is out of sync mpg files, whether this be mpeg2 or DVD output.

In the past I've used tmpgenc express, but used to get juddery playback. Anyway, just wondered if anyone has any ideas on the Mainconcept problems.

  2. Sync is an audio issue. Most video encoders do video really well, and Mainconcept is no exception.
These are video encoders, not audio encoders.
You might want to learn how to do audio separately.
"Juddery playback" can be caused by incorrect aspect conversion, incorrect PAL to NTSC conversion (framerate), wrong/poor media selection, encoder settings of many sorts (motion search precision, DC Component, etc.), to name just a few.
To get proper playback, you must understand what your source is, and how to encode it properly, no matter what encoder you use.
