Another thing is that if it's one of those cars where the headlinghts are on all the time, you might want to look into a way of altering it so that it's only on when you turn them on... There are webpages devoted to this topic...

nothing wrong with that -- it's been the law for many many years in canada and has been proven to reduce accidents ..

It may be time to get a good auto book and a cheap multi tester meter. A meter that test for voltage, Ohms and continuity. $10 and up depending where you shop and the quality that you want. I reccomend one that has alligator clips and pointed probes. The book should have a diagram of your system and a trouble shooting guide. The order that you trouble shoot in can vary, but the way the book says to do it has some logic to it. You can start at the battery or the lights and work to the other end, it shouldn't really matter, but the book may have a method that will start out with the most likely to least likely or some other logic.

Instead of buying new lamps just yet, test them with the meter or wire them directly to the battery to see if they do infact work. You may not really need to follow every wire in the system from start to finish just make sure that if it has power at the starting end and it has power at the next connection and so on. If the switch is easy to remove and you already know how to remove it, I would start there. Check to see if power is coming into the switch from the proper wires and leaving out thru the proper wires when the switch is operated. This is kind of starting in the middle but if there is a problem on either side you may have just cut out half of the trouble shooting. Just follow the flow of the electrons and you should find the problem.

Just guessing? I would put money on a bad ground somewhere. There are so many different car makers and ways of doing things that without just jumping in it can be hard to guess good. As with most machinery it will probally end up being at some point of interphase. Like a switch or a connection joint.

I hope that you like puzzles Good luck!

Just kidding, keep your cool, be methodical and you will figure it out.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?
