  1. i want to get an external usb 2.0 dvd writer for my notebook that is at max price $140? ish?

i am not a fan of the + media, and i dont want DL+ burners.

problem is, every external dvd writer i find has DL+ (making it more expensive, right?).

circuitcity and bestbuy. anyone know where i could one WITHOUT dual layer +r?

Last year when I bought my LG-4082B which is not DL, I also bought an external enclosure USB2/Firewire enclosure. I was able to put the dvd burner into the enclosure and read and burn DVDs.

If you don't want, DL, check out this drive

    it is a re-badged Pioneer

so, put the dvd burner into an enclosure and viola, you have an external burner for $65.

Just because it says DL doesn't mean it can't burn single layer disks. They all will.I can get the Pioneer Dl burner which burns DL +- DVDR-+ and anything else for $109 here in Canada.Add a $30 usb case, and there you go.

    Hi.

Do you have any personal experience with this enclosure because I've seen some @ Bigfoot Computers for double the price. They have fans and such too.

Not this particular one.I use a nexstar for a 200 gb hd.It has no fan,but you don't have to have it turned on all the time anyway, therefor no overheating. If the case is aluminium,it will act as a heat sink for the dvd drive or hard drive.

Lots of them at ewaggle.com . I bought my Benq 1620 with USB 2.0 Enclosure there for $120 or so and it looks like it's cheaper now. 8 mths without a single problem.

These are good prices, but as phantom is from Canada and was asking for prices,i assumed he was looking for Canadian outlets. Our Government puts up some roadblocks to discourage us from shopping out of country.Although it is not enough on bigger ticket items, small cost items can be cost prohibitive when ordering from the U.S.A $5 canada post "handling fee" is sometimes charged for across border delivery, and taxes can be added. This is not consistant, but on a $20 item it can boost the cost past reasonable after the dollar conversion.
Still, if a big ticket item was that much cheaper in the U.S. i would still buy from there and absorb the extra costs. I have done in the past, and saved money.
The $120 benq deal, after the dollar conversion works out to around $145 canadian.Factor in the shipping costs, and it's cheaper here.A lot of companies, like e-waggle don't ship outside the U.S. anyway.
