trouble with dvd+r

I have an iomagic 4x dvd r+ r- burner and I have noticed that with sony 8x and maxell 8x dvd+r they will only burn at 2.4x any ideas?? i have the latest firmware 2.60 and not sure where to go from here. I get same info from nero info tool and dvdinfopro. this is what they are telling me.

I have no problems burning with most any 4x dvd even sony and maxell, just with 8x dvds

It seems your choices are to wait for a new firmware release that will enable 4x writing on the 8x discs you are having problems with, or return the discs where you bought them. Sorry.

Your burner likely simply doesn't recognize the Media code, so it's defaulting to the slowest burning speed, 2.4x. Unless there's a firmware upgrade that includes these media codes, you'll be stuck at 2.4x with this media.
