For some reason something I downloaded off SourceForge corrputed and now I've got this silly EXE on my desktop that I can't get rid of. I tried using my file-burning utility from Windows and it didn't even work. It said it was over-writing with 0s but the file still remains. I then tried booting into Safe Mode and tried deleting in the GUI, with the burn utility, and even the command line. Next up I booted into the recovery console with my XP CD to try to delete it from a command prompt there but it seems the directory structure is locked since all I get is "access denied" from the console even when I try the delete command from the root directory (c:\).
What's next? I don't have SATA in any other system so I can't just swap it into one of my other boxes and delete it from another OS. Is there another boot disk I can try using to get rid of the file?

FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming

You may have already tried this, but I have had some success by trying to rename it to something other than an .exe, or changing the program default that accesses them. I've had a few of those suckers that refuse to die. Sometimes moving them to the desktop helps, then rename, though if you tried to delete it in safe mode, I'm not sure if that will help. I just keep beating on them, moving them around and they finally give in.

Can't move or rename it at all otherwise it would have made my job deleting it from a command prompt a but easier. Of course it has to have a super-long name that I couldn't recall when I booted to the recovery console

end all processes, explorer.exe too, in the task manager do a file/open and browse to the desktop and try deleting.

Someone once pointed me to an awesome piece of software that once installed you could right click on a file and select to Delete on next restart.
Can't remember the name of it for the life of me though, it was free at that. -
If you are running NTFS and a corruption occurred while it was being written, you could have either a bad index or the security settings are incomplete (or both). Check the security on the file and make sure that your login has delete rights (i.e. 'full control').
For a bad index run a 'checkdisk' which should fix any errors, then try the delete again. -
Or you could use WhoLockMe without having to restart your computer
